Sure.   Cuttings will often have a smooth side and a rough side.  It depends on the hardness of the metal being cut, the tool geometry, depth of cut, cutting speed and feed rate; dry or lubricated.

I deliberately cropped my avatar image from the attached one, so that it would make a pretty picture, and obscure the rough nature of what it it, except for those who would recognize it immediately as swarf.

This machine tool supply company seems to have a slightly different crop of the same image in their banner - you have to wait for the images to step through:

I saw lots of them when I made axle shafts for the local EP mills,
4140 12/14" in diam and up to 10-12' long, solid steel shafts,
.125 deep bite with Carbide lathe bits, those cuttings (Swarf),
would come off the bit smoking HOT and the same color as the photo.
The OLD German lathe had a 4' chuck and 20' long bed,
it was not a fast lathe but was a work of art when cutting.
