I dug up a review on the 888 Medalist on the Pyramyd Air blog yesterday that said the 888 uses the same action as the 853, but it has a CO2 cylinder instead of the pump. Is it possible to buy the CO2 cylinder and convert an 853 to CO2? If it is, I would be very interested in getting another 853 from the CMP so I can have several hundred shots of highly accurate fun.

I would have to peruse the parts diagrams for the both of them, but I'm pretty sure that a conversion is not possible.
For starters, the stocks are different; the 853 is open at the underside of the forearm to allow for the swing of the pump arm.
The 888 is solid, as the cylinder remains fixed.
The 853 valve would have no provision for screwing in the CO2 cylinder, and would have no mechanism for releasing CO2....
I am not sure about the valve internals....
The trigger groups could be the same, as is the bolt/breech mechanism........
IMHO, the short answer is.........no.

Sure the stocks would be a little different, but a saw and/or scrap wood can remove/add wood where needed. As you say Ronno, the key would be in attaching the cylinder to the valve body. In the diagram below it looks like part 20 is the key. The cylinders and fill adapters are available from the CMP, so part 20 and the o rings could be attained from Daisy. The question is would the adapter (part 20) work on a 853 valve body? I figure anyone who has had both guns apart would probably know for sure if there are any other differences.

I own both. Just no. 888s come on the market from time to time. Check with places like Pilk Guns, Champion’s Choice, etc. also consider the upgraded model 887. Well worth the money.
