"El Cheapo" vodka or Everclear (50% or so) - we like the Everclear one but not easy to find in Cali.Make slits in the orange and insert coffee beans - easier is you do one slit, insert coffee bean, repeat. I tried doing all the slits first and then insert the coffee beans...it wasn't pretty.Put the orange in a large glass jar, pour the sugar on top and then pour the booze on top, close the jar. Let it sit for 44 days, we put in a kitchen cabinet (nice and dark, constant temp.) Shake the jar every couple days or so.After the 44 days, drain the liquor ( I "juice" the orange too) filter if you want, chill and enjoy! Now THAT sounds good! Thanks!

Thanks.I read "WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE REAL HAVANA CLUB RUM?" posted there and apparently I am searching for the Cuban version that is a knock off of the original family recipe. If you look at my pic it clearly shows Cuba in many places and even the tax stamp seal at the bottom. I tried using the "FIND A LOCATION" for places in the US that sell the genuine family version now made at the Bacardi plant in Puerto Rico, but the map shows nothing in any my area, closest is Detroit. But not even Chicago or Indianapolis has any shown.

It was the offical rum of the British navy for hundreds of years. When I first tried it, it was an honest 94 proof. Now, it's 84 proof, but they now have a Pusser's gunpowder proof", which is 109 proof.I am not a rum fan, but that 94 proof stuff I originally had was very nice for sipping straight, no ice. I imagine the 84 and 109 proof versions are, too.Check them out, and at least visit the website to read about the history of that rum.

Just (hic) checking in (hic)...Sorry...Potato Juice. You know what I discovered tonight? If you put Muffuletta olive salad in a strainer... and pour vodka through it into a glass... it is one AMAZING dirty Martini!
Very interesting thread; however, it seems that all the concocting, inventing and mixing would severely cut into the drinking time.
