Tom , here’s a bit of advise . If you plan on shooting any kind of slug, get yourself a sizing kit first before even buying the projectiles. NOE dies and punches are fairly inexpensive and a Lee handpress. I’ve seen 4” groups at 30 yards get shrunk down to less than 1/2” . Store bought or not , doesn’t mean your barrel will like the size sold over the counter.

 Truer words have never been spoken. As little as .0001 can make a huge difference. Sadly, vendors/manufacturers would go broke try to offer ever slug in .0001 increments. It is our job as shooters to do this for ourselves

So many are not willing to do anything for themselves now days. Sad and equally pathetic. If it doesn't work instantly, throw it away. this is the new norm. GRRRRR!!!!!!

OK, here's the skinny.


1. Using a very thin, sharp box cutter or even thinner window decal scraper blade, press down to the very bottom of the cavity. A large, deep HP helps here a "Lot".


This will give a very wide nose. Much wider than cal.


2.  Using a finely finished cone, near the shape of the original slug, press it in and tap it lightly to close the vanes. This gives a good, original shaped nose for good BC and keep accuracy the same as before the mod. Especially the poi.


3. Now size as you normally would. Finished!


For a very large expansion in hp long guns, rather than the blade, or phillips head, I use a # T-15 Torque bit with the nose perfectly flattened on a fine diamond hone. This gives very fine serrations in the hp and causes it to open in a multi petal HP. Very reliable and repeatable. Once again, I place the bit in the mill, or drill press with the depth stop set for a given hp depth.


I am making a ram with blade to fit my mill so that each cut will be precision in both depth and location. WOO-HOO!

I'm almost to the point of using a strong magnet to erase the darned thing if that is even possible.

Yes Sir! I use a phillips as you do but to initially locate the center and indexing for the blade itself.

Now to get the shape matched on a female closing cone ... That's going to be a bit more difficult

Perhaps take a unmodified slug, fill HP with wax, then roll said slug is Krytek type chain lube wax for a non stick surface.  Then make a small hand held thimble that has a generous O.S. hole in it, Partially fill with JB weld epoxy then partially pushing in the waxed slug. let JB set up and then pull the slug out.  WaLa a perfect transfer of slugs nose shape that I would assume put a split nose slug back into perfect shape ?

Maybe cut the nose off the end of a ballpoint pen, old click type.

Your gonna laugh at the accidental solution I came up with. Hobby superglue tip. It is long and tapered and non stick. Cut the end off, use open end for small wooden dowel to tap slug back out after sizing the tip. 


Drop slug in point first, using a wooden dowel to tap it into the cap until it is tight.. Use small dowel, (tooth pick, or wooded shaft of medical wood stemmed swab) tapered to fit hp cavity.


Now hows that for back woods n-ga-naring.

I shot a 1 gal water jug yesterday at 80 yards with the heavier 35 gr. slug out of the Raptor in the 930's and it blew the jug all the heck up. Only the base and two semi pellets were left of the slug. Man, it is gonna be a fantastic pest round. 


The typically plastic milk container was left in ruins. Woo-Hoo!!!


Added bonus, with hp only without slits or further mods gives a nice mushroom, or with the aforementioned # T-15 sharpened bit pressed in it gives an even larger mushroom in expansion.


So one slug can now be deep penetration, two different mushroom profiles for meat game, or explosive for vermin. All are accurate, all are easily doable.


Seems like a huge Win-Win to me.     Lov'n Every Minute of it. LOL
