HP's in air Pistols?

There was recently a thread on people not being able to see expansion in hp slugs from their pistol and guns generally under 600 fps If I remember correctly.


This spurred me in to action as I really enjoy the PP-700 and use it for quick vermin control. But it must perform!


Here are the results from my latest efforts from the PP-700 in .22 at 470's to 490's in a .27 gr slug that I am testing.


this is 20 Yards fired into a milk jug filled with tap water. Nothing fancy, just what I had.


Once finished testing for expansion and accuracy, I intend to make a fixture for my Mill to be able to produce these with precision.


They expanded well over .45 cal. Woo-Hoo!!!

Mike, amazing expansion at those velocities.  A .22 pellet fired into a milkjug at those speeds could almost be recovered and shot again.

Randall, it is 2% lead tin mix. 


Can't wait to try the same mod on the 35 gr slugs I use in the Raptor. At mid to high 900's they should be "Vermin Destroyers". LOL

Tom, they are the 257420 cones in .223  that I decked the mold to give a 29 gr slug.  I size down and hp'd the mold.  Which gives a 27 gr slug now.

Wait- Did I read that right:  those slugs are from a standard 257420 mold that you decked and HP'ed, then you sized them down to .223?  I mean to say, that you kept down sizing the slug from .257 (or whatever they're dropping from the mold) to .223?  *Whistles*  That's a LOT of sizing!!

Tom, it is a clone of the 420 that is delivered in .223-.224. I size down to .2184 for the FX barrel and .2227 for the Brownell's liner. 


Mold is by Arsenal, as NOE is not stocking .22 slugs, or anything I need. GRRRRRR!!!


Sizing down .006 is still huge, and stumps most casters. However with my modded sizers, it is smooth as silk. Feels like sizing only .001.  Even Swede at NOE had a hard time believing it, until I sent him some slugs, He was impressed as that much usually ruins a slug. However, they look better than any sized slug you ever saw. The sides come out perfectly mirror polished. No lines, no smears, No damage to the groves or driving bands. Nada. or  nada. Just beautiful. Woo-Hoo!!!

Nice . This is exactly my what I need. Most winter rabbit I shoot are within 20’ . Having some expansion on the 217 BBT would be great.

Very neat! I've experimented with slugs and expansion for decades, and those are some of the best results that I've seen. They are obviously pre-slit or stressed. Are you doing it with some kind of blade arrangement before you do the sizing?

+1, curious to know the secret to getting such amazing expansion.  And being able to size one mold to fit BOTH .22LR and pellet barrels is just the icing on the cake...

Hey Mike, that's remarkable...an absolute meat grinder of expansion. 

If and when you get an opportunity to try them on a squirrel or similar animal, please see if you can recover one and see how it does.  Preferably a vitals / soft tissue shot.  The reason I'm asking is the JSB Hades open up beautifully when fired into water but unfortunately they do nothing of the sort in flesh.

I've experimented with low velocity expansion in hollow points for years, and that is impressive.

Impressive.  You may want to try expansion in a different medium.  I used wet phone books, for instance.  I am building up a pile of glossier paper now, a big grizzly catalog and magazines, that I will test soon.  I only got expansion on metal mags.  I was shooting in the mid 600s from my Prod.  I've tuned it up to 700 plus now and want to retest.  I only had about half a dozen pellets on hand to test.

I also wonder about trajectory under 500 fps.  I like my 700+ tune better in part because the velocity variation across the string and at different ranges produces significantly less vertical POI change than when I was shooting about 100 fps slower.  You would be another 100 fps down.  That suggests you could see over half an inch vertical variation from only 5 yards distance difference.  That would make range judgement critical.  I can go up about 2 fpe by switching to a 21.3 grain Barracuda but I don't want to loose 100 fps and deal with the associated POI changes with range.
