The gift from John (fwbsport) arrived yesterday, Christmas Eve. I had a horrible headache yesterday so I waited untill today to really examine it closely.

This is exactly how it came out of the box. Awesome right? It doesn't look like it's been shot much, John you must take marvelous care of your rifles I only found a couple of dings on the stock and they are so small they can easily be overlooked.

John sent me a Parrus .177 last February.
The wooden one in the picture.
I also was lucky to get a .22 Parrus ( black one in picture ) from another member ( Bill - MMCM13 ).

Great kindness extended here is a wonderful testimony to the GTA members. John, that's a great gift. LT. Dan, you've got a super good looking HW50 there. I'd forego the sights, slap a quality scope on it, and start nailing targets at 50-60 yards (which is well beyond my open sight eye vision).

I have other rifles I will probably give away I just realized my HW98 .177 is easily replacing anything in .177!

I can't really sell a rifle to anyone because once I use it it is sighted in and ready for use by anyone.

I feel what I have done to the rifle is learn from it and then go the next step to eliminate problems with offhand shooting. Offhand shooting requires absolute quiet concentration without rush and Hector's D54 .20 allows it along with all the other HW98s which, by the way, are truly the best air rifles I've had the pleasure of shooting offhand along with the FWB Sport and others like the Daystate Huntsman (the story on this PCP is only beginning) but right now my HW98 .177 is shooting Rangemaster Sovereign 10.33 gr with ease. I think any .177 I choose would work inside this machine but for now I am still snugging up screws and shooting the HW98 .177 thinking if I had ONE rifle..........

I have to "clean out" my signature to the bad to the bones minimum.....

On this rifle the open sights are dead on for nice eyes, but if you want to put ANY scope on top use the Diana Zero Recoil Mounts and Rings with the STUD set at the closest to the MUZZLE!

That rifle will then show you its capability with a scope. I've had two scopes on that rifle, a Trijicon and also the Leupold 3-9X 33mm Air Rifle Scope from Straight Shooters years ago. My problem in not wanting to scope that rifle is the grooves are not tight enough to prevent SKID from ANY scope atop!

So you need a locking lug to "cement" the scope mount in without having to rely upon the grooves alone. However, I have witnessed rifles using lugs this way WITHOUT the Diana ZR mounts in time will scrape into the "lug" to allow the entire scope mount set to keep setting back more and more until that lug (which was a hollow type that is rather common in many lugged scope mounts) is sheared to the point of 50%! Can you believe that! So the HW50 NEEDs a LOCKING LUG in there (no #d screw top mount is going to hold the vibration without a lug) and since you do why not make the rifle recoiless to your choice of scope?

No need to worry about "magnum or springer" rated scopes. Whatever scope you have you can believe in for your eyes to hold zero without shock is CANDIDATE to what you elect.

I have a $70 Traditions 3-10X atop my racehorse rifle: the Hector Special or the H.S. of all air rifles. It has PERFECT optics my eyes can SEE with and the crosswire arrangement is SO CLEAR it looks as Bright and Clear as a Swarovsky Z3 atop my HW95L .22.

That $70 scope by Traditions (a black powder type of scope!) is my perfect scope on top of the HECTOR SPECIAL .20 D54! And the mounts and rings are the ZR you can buy today for around $70.

I never mounted the ZR system on the HW50 so the horizon can be great there!

That's about what I see the new .20s in HW50 are doing with their pellets! Truly that rifle is deadlier than any .20 HW50!

My scope hasn't made it here yet. So I shot using open sights today. Even with my aging eyesight this rifle definitely showed me what it could do.
I started at 20 yards shooting RWS Superdomes 14.5 gr at my 3" spinners. That was too easy so I moved to 1-1/2". I was popping them every shot. I noticed the pellets were hitting in the same spot on the spinner so I moved up to the one inch spinners. LOL that was more difficult but I was still hitting them most of the time.
I decided to see how far I could hit. At 30 yards, with these Superdomes I was hitting a 3" spinners everytime. I had to quit because it started sprinkling.

Oh, I forgot, I was shooting offhanded with no support.

Good to see the christmas spirit is alive and well. I've been thinking of re-homing one of my many scopes lately. I cant seem to part with any of my current guns, though.

At any rate, the HW50 is the nicest springer I've owned, and resultingly my favorite, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Yes sir. John's generosity is refreshing. And this was not his first act of generosity either.
No doubt this will become my favorite rifle.

Well it was sighted in offhand.....and never needed any more adjustment once there at 25 yards. I'd step back to 35 yards and still make hits with the open sights. It can use a low mounted scope that is light to extend range!
