🙄 USED Gun Prices — Have you gotten USED to them?

🔴 Prices of USED Airguns — There must be a reason why they are so high — But is it reasonable...?



So, we've got the Maverick out. With all new this and all new that. Way beyond your father's BB gun.... Wait, way beyond the PCP you bought just 5 years ago.

Then we have:

The Cricket 2.
The Veteran 2.

The Priest 2.

The Impact Mk2.

The Wildcat Mk2, wait, make that Mk3.

And all the technological bells and whistles that used to be upgrades — and now come as standard, right off the bat.

Well, I really like the specs of these second and third generation guns, I like their looks, I like the progress of technology that they represent.  That's 3 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.

Now, I can't help but wonder…. 🤔

➔ With all these new guns coming out making the previous models "outdated/ old" and with "obsolete technology":

❓ When will the prices of USED high-end PCP's finally drop to more affordable levels?

 

I mean I simply can't afford a $1000 gun, let alone one for $1500 or $2000. I was OK with that when I chose my profession, and I'm still OK with that. 👍🏼   

➔ However, am I the only one that feels that a gun that sold NEW for $1200 — and that has been superseded by Mk2 and Mk3 — should normally cost USED $800 or less…… 🤔 

 
I would point out that the prices for cell phones follow this path, and so do prices for motorcycles, cars, large screen TVs, etc. etc.

➔ It's because we all are more or less gun collectors — so, the older guns that we rarely shoot anymore and that are superseded we do not sell — so the used airgun market is very slow — which drives the prices way out of proportion…..   [Maybe?? 🤔])

Never mind.  I have two guns I decided to sell asap to have the money to pay for a new gun (and you know the rest of the story already).

I now have the new gun. Yeah! And I still have the two old guns. Two years and counting. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Just give it time. Prices will come down. People are just going to try to get whatever they can... the "extra" $1000 these fancy guns cost on top of the $300-$500 you might expect to spend as you say are becoming standard.  Seems like the market is nearing a tipping point (what do I know though?)maybe moving past paying the huge premiums for small innovations which are now commonplace.

    After the pandemic, when normal production resumes flooding the market with NEW, the old, used, Classic's will be forgotten about as well as these bloated pandemic prices.$$ ¿

Yeah, I wished this was just a pandemic phenomenon — but these high prices of USED guns have been common for the last couple of years before the pandemic. 😟

Itch a niche market filled with enthusiasts who are much more knowledgeable and hard core then hobby’s with a passing interest.

Big difference between a guy who puts out 2 grand for a gun and the  drops the coin on optics, support / air charging gear etc. then the average Ruger 10/22 owner.  (No disrespect to the average 10/22 owner as I am one of you. ).

Was getting worried about the used/vintage gun market.(99 % of my collection) A few years ago prices dropped considerably, especially with the yellow forum disappearing.

There was a time with the yellow forum classifieds. you had what felt like only seconds to determine if you were buying or not with an "I'll take it " response. Or someone was going to snatch it up from under you....those were the days.... Never to be duplicated again.

I'm glad to see the vintage/used market prices turn around.

Matthias now you got me worried - I have to sell a couple of (nearly new) PCP guns so I can get me a new Wildcat MkIII (wifey's conditions  ), so I hope the used prices don't drop Too far!

Some of it also has to do with impatience. There are things people sell out of impulse. No different than impulse buying.

We are all guilty of both in some form or another.

I'll give you an example. I got a truck that I've been sitting on for over 20 plus years. It's in mint condition, super low miles, and it's a rare breed, even for it's day. To the average person it's worth diddly squat (especially comparing to KBB). To the person that knows what it is and why it's important, it's worth a lot, and they are willing to pay me top dollar for it.

Applies the same to air guns. It's a buyer's market, but the seller can only dictate whether or not they will let it go for that amount.

Just because the latest thing has come out doesn't mean what came before it instantly lacks what matters.
What was good before is still good when it comes to airguns, it's not like a cellphone that could be unusable 10 years from now.

Not everyone cares about ancillary bells and whistles that do not really make the gun what it is, some people will pay up for a good shooter that's built to last regardless and I suspect that's why many expensive airguns remain expensive even when used.
Not to mention the fact that most people seem to take care of these things, otherwise you might see lower prices on best up examples.

Ditto. I've spent a lot of my hard earned money on my air guns. Some of them I got for free from certain manufacturers (and some I had to return). This is what happens when you spend lots of money and do a lot of communication to manufacturers over the years.  You establish a trust with them. Some want to know you, some don't give a squat about you. All fine and dandy with me.

I can give you a very recent example, that Umarex Ready air compressor I keep asking them a certain question about. I contacted them a few times, and they keep saying they will get back to me. Now I'm not the brightest light on the Christmas tree (no pun intended for this time of the season), but I think they know I'm right and they are figuring out what to do (or rather, what to say to me). Not to say Umarex is bad, as I've had good interaction with them in the past. They just seem like a slippery snake on this one, but patience will succumb. At the end of the day, I'm concerned with safety -- not looking to give them a bad name, or sue them or whatever. I'm trying to help them so they don't need to end up back tracking and dealing with a massive recall on a product. Again, I'll reiterate it -- Umarex is not a bad company. I'm just using them as an example. I have run into this with many companies.

Going back to the pricing, I've spent a lot of money on certain airguns that were NOT worth what I paid for it. Mostly due to the poor engineering and excessive parts replacement to make it right -- sometimes right out of the box! These aren't Benjamin Wildfires, folks... some of the airguns are high end Air Force, Gamos, etc in the cost of over $1,000+. I see why people get mad when they take home an expensive airgun and they fill it up with air and it doesn't even want to hold air.  -- This is also why I only buy from Pyramyd Air most a majority of the time. I do the $10 for 10. It's a lot easier for them to fix or replace the airgun there, then playing the shipping game or me fixing a brand new airgun on my bench.

Prices have been driven up this year for a few reasons.  But I am not and will not be used to the used prices I see.  I've passed on literally every gun I've thought about buying this year.  In part because I already have a lot.  But also becuase the price is not right.  I did try to buy one of those rws 54s for 265$ or whatever it was, with no luck

it's because of people like myself. I love the older guns....As far as I am concerned, the older guns (at least in the springer world) tend to be better, more accurate, better made, and aesthetically nicer. As with the world of anything old and/or collectible, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay.

It is worth EXACTLY what another person is willing to pay for it.  No more, no less.

Do think that once a GEN II is out...the GEn I's are down graded in value.

Then again,it's supply/demand....value and asking price do not have to agree.

Guy can ask whatever price he cares to. Either it's worth it to you to buy, or it's not.  Depends on how long he's willing to sing "happy birthday " every year the rifle hangs around un-sold.

Not a pretty chapter of a miss-spent youth hustling a few bucks.

Local  tragic event...like a large factory/bussiness shutting it's doors...100's if not 1000's of people out of work?

(this was more firearms based...they couldn't sell nationally without an FFL....airgunners with the time can...but unexpected events when they need the money NOW rather than later).

Could be a "vulture"...check the local pawn shops/trader-papers and be ready to "dicker-down".

I had the power of "time"...they didn't.

YEah...can be like kicking a cripple....so I condered that whenever I could beat the pawn shop offers in a man-on-man private sale, are actually helping a bit.

Were times when I paid too much and actually lost money in the re-sale...just out of the obvious seller's need/bad luck story. 

Guess I'm human after all.

And I guess, I'm in the minority here of not being willing (or able) to pay 70-80% of the new price for a used gun....
But that's just me, of course. 😊 


So, a question that prompted me to write the OP is that:  WHY are there so many buyers who are fine with 70-80% of the NP?  😊

Say I have a gun that I want $1000 for it, but you only want to pay $900. If I decide to sell it for $900 then YOU determined the "worth", if I decide to NOT sell it for $900 then I determined the "worth", Agree? if you don't agree then why didn't you get the gun for $900?
Buying and selling is a 2 way street, especially when it is something no longer produced.

the problem i have is when someone has all this money into a gun and try to get a mint.  when truck owners put all those useless accessories on a truck and go to trade it in they get nothing more for all the bs.  not everyone wants all the extras.  if im looking for a used impact, im not gonna pay $2100 just because it has extras i dont need.  I’ll just spend  that money to get a new one!

I've bought used from reputable air rifle places who take them in and refurbish them back to operation.

I've bought used from one member here because I fell in love immediately with his vortexed .177 HW30 which is still with me in remembrance.   He took away a BOSS .30 and another PCP I had (Rapid) and I like the springers he gave up for the PCPs! 

This tells me anyone with a springer they don't want I'd take because I like them always and as long as they are taken care of like the Gipper took care of his vortexed HW30 .177 I will take it as "brand new" and work with it.

I looked on the sites for prices of new rifles in AOA and to me they seem about 20-50 dollars higher.  The used rifles on AOA (and pistols) are not selling.

There WAS a Tarantula .22 available at AOA some time back that I was ready to buy but didn't and it's gone.  No wonder.

Anybody know the Tarantula besides me here?  Anybody know the Black Widow .22 that came after the Tarantula?
