I tried early retirement but it didn't stick. I keep thinking about retiring again but this job is just too much dang FUN!Since I started with the park service at the age of 44 I have built two dugout canoes, become a wildland fire fighter and engine boss, hunted hogs from an airboat at night, rescued all manner of birds, turtles, snakes, and mammals, lead hundreds of nature hikes, bike, boat, and canoe tours, shot muskets, matchlocks, and civil war cannon, and worked with the greatest team of people I have ever met. This April they are sending me to airboat school!I ain't gonna retire again until the quacks tell me I have to turn in my burn boots!

I find the people fun to watch, and sometimes make bets on their predicted behavior The human zoo can be amusing LOL . Just do not climb the fence into the exhibit
Well Kris, you're not married to my wife. There's not a lot she can do with her back but sure sees anything and everything that needs done. When we moved in here most of the yard as in the 5 acres that are fenced needed a lot of work. After 3 years there's still a lot of work. I see members talking about picking up blown down branches where I've got trees that the former owner just left laying around that need to be cut up and moved to the burn pits down in the meadow and burned. I might be able to finish before I die but who knows.😂😂

Sonja and I have spent hundreds of hours working our property 2 hours west- then compounded it by buying the adjacent lot- adding another 7+ acres- with my in-laws and sister-in-law. But ya know what, working the property and clearing the brush, poison ivy, and brambles has been rewarding in itself. We're not touching the 2nd lot until my sister-in-law and her husband are ready. When you compare the lots, ours is now a park with minimal underbrush clear sightlines down to the river. We'll need to rent a woodchipper again this fall as we extricate the rest of the piles- which is now possible thanks to the last months' efforts. But now we have time, equipment, and knowledge to do the work. One would never think a 1st-gen CR-V to be a great "logging truck", but clearing the nasty stumps and blowdown has made clear paths without running hundreds of feet of slings and chains. My plans include work (of course), working on yet another axe handle- this time for my camp axe- and building a cabinet base for my mother-in-law. After work, another run to the county dump. I have oil and antifreeze to recycle and some construction debris to drop off. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up at a hardware store this evening.
Morning...It's a nice cool morning here in lower Alabama. Me and Rambo got up at 5am. He ate and I made coffee. He went back to bed and I watched weather/news until 6:15. Then Boss got up and ate. When she was done eating her and I came out to the Red Shed.I busted out the Crosman C362 .177 short barreled gun and after taking in the entire outside and inside of the Red Shed, she took up her usual position on the floor right behind my shooting chair.Pretty sure Betty Lou has a grocery run planned for this morning.Update... Boss just located an empty pellet tin from the floor and she's daring me to take it from her.
