My slugs came in.

Mr. Vogel sent me 7 different weights of his stuff with enough in each batch to shoot 3, 3 shot groups. I got a place lined up for next weekend to test them out. My leak is so small it won't matter.


My buddy already has a 100yrd range set up so I'm bringing 3 rented tanks with me. I got slugs from 126 to 171 all in soft 309. I'm hoping to find the right one.

Looking forward to the results!  You should at least see SOMETHING accurate@50 yards out of those 7 different designs/weights.....hopefully out to 100yards+.

3 groups of 3 isn't much, so make sure you make them count!  Sometimes a fill pressure of just 100psi difference changes everything, so go up or down 100psi if you are seeing poor accuracy from a given design at a given fill pressure. 

I would start at 50 yards with a very large target so you know you will be "on paper".

Finally got to do some testing today and the best I could do was with the 150gr Vogel hollow points. at 50yards off a shaky bench and 15mph variable wind was 1 1/4" at best. I tried from 122 to 150gr and the 150 was the best.

I was hoping for a little tighter but at this point I feel comfortable taking a hog out to 50yrds.

Where do you get those 'snake bite' slugs you guys are talking about?? I need to try some more.

No .308 SnakeBites......but there are some BigLube designs in .32 that may be able to size-down to .309 or so.....I would ask the BigLube boolit casters that offer stuff made from near-pure lead (IronMule for one) and see what they can do as far as sizing-down the .32 slugs.  Dash Caliber may do pure lead for you but I'm not sure about that.....

Drat. I read that the DAQ doesn't like the slugs that have the wax/grease or whatever that stuff is. So I boiled a bunch of 130gr ones to remove it. I'm going to re-try them to see if it makes a difference. They are not hollow points.

What slugs are those?  

If you ask most boolit casters to leave the lube off they will be happy to do so.  I order all my stuff without lube.

I learned my lesson about that "mule snot" cowboy action lube a long time ago.....never seen a barrel so clogged-up.

They came with the gun and I have about 50 of them now cleaned up. I believed they weighed 126. No idea where they came from because they don't look like the ones from Hunters Supply

Looks like the "crayon" lube used for smokeless powder loads......probably won't come off to much in an airgun, as I have found .357 slugs on the ground shot from firearms that appeared to still have most of the lube in the lube grooves. 

Easy enough to remove, though.

I may have committed a crime. I did not even check the bore of this gun when I got it. When you mentioned 'Mule Snot' a little bell went off in my head. CLEAN THE BORE

I had to make some patches out of a cotton rag and proceeded to swab it out. GUNK from who knows where on the first 5 passes.

I feel stupid.

After 20 total passes the patches are now clean and I suspect the barrel is too.

Wow....I'm surprised you could get a 1 1/4 inch group@50yards with a gunked-up barrel.

MUCH better now! I used the 115gr slugs from Hunters Supply that came with the gun just to see what they would do with a clean barrel and the wax removed. When I first shot these they would hardly stay on paper at 25yds???

Here they are at 50yds flying at 860 and 115gr for 189FPE


The first shot always flies off about an inch but the next two are spot on.

Next week I'll go back to the hollow points in .309

Might be able to get rid of that first flyer by lowering the fill pressure...... only 100psi or so sure can make a difference.  Here is an example.

Nice test report! I filled it every 3 shots to 3000. I'll try to stop at 2900 next go around and see if I can stop that first flyer.

Right now I am real happy that it is not so slug picky.
