Below is a simulation target for the Quigley bucket shoot. The target is set out at 55 yards and the shooter must use open sights/peep sights. This was my first attempt using a 1975 Sheridan .20 cal. Last shot hit the bucket.

The Rifle: I used cylindrical 14.3 grain pellets.The Sheridan cost me $50 and the ladder sight cost $85.

1.75 inch bucket at 55 yards.

It was estimated that Quigley shot at a bucket that was 17.5" at 550 yards...so for airgun Quigley shoot target was scaled down to approx size to simulate...hence 1.75" at 55 yards.

We shoot empty plastic 35mm film containers until the last guy hitting is "The winner".
Pretty resilient targets and without known distance,quite the challenge!
A few times the target stopped being hit around 135-140 yards.

I actually watched a video the other day of a guy who tracked down where they filmed Quigley Down Under. He even got in touch with the guy who owned the land where the movie set was setup with the working farm. Anyway, he used Google and found out the actual "Quigley" shot in the movie was only 325 yards.

I never would have thought it, but he showed the picture from Google Earth and it shows the distance on there. So maybe this would cause the size of the buckets to change??

Thanks Ray that does change things a bit... I'm going to set the existing bucket target out at 35 yards and see what happens. It will surely be easier but offhand/open sights is still a big factor.

It WAS a movie.
There is no way that rifle could shoot 300 yards held parallel to the ground as seen in the movie.
The bullet allegedly weighed 500 grains.
It would have bounced two or three times before it reached 300 yards.
Gravity is a constant, you know.
You did notice there was no recoil??
In other scenes he was prone.
The recoil very well could have broken his shoulder blade, if there was recoil.
I was in High School (Grant High School in Van Nuy, CA) with Tommy boy.

Valdez was knocking guys off horses at 1200 yards.....lol.

Look this up: Billy Dixon knocked an Indian off his horse at a distance later surveyed to be 1,538 yards.) He used a 50-90 Sharps.

When I shot my original target wind was a 90 degree crosswind intermittent at 5 mph from right to left. Good luck shooting !!

If the Sharps rifle was shooting at 2000fps (I doubt it because blackpowder is not very efficient) and we will assume it was sighted in at 500 yards, a 500 grain bullet will drop 13 feet before it reaches 1500 yards and take 4.5 seconds.

You know if you fire a rifle absolutely parallel to the ground and at the same time drop a bullet of the same weight, they will both hit the ground at the same time.

It will not take 4.5 seconds for the dropped bullet to reach the ground will it?

Quigley was a good movie, period!

BTW....My son shoots his rifles at a measured mile....

When I re-qualified with the M14 in 1964 targets at 500 yards had 20" bulls.. (of course the X ring was much smaller)....the front sight blade was as wide as that 20" bull at that distance.....(open peeps on a rack gun)...I shot 248/250 which they sent me TAD to the rifle team where you received a match conditioned M1 Garand for competition.

The course of fire with the M-14 in '63 and '64 was the same as for the M-1 Garand:

200 yards - 10 rounds, slow-fire off-hand, hasty sling
10 rounds, rapid-fire, sitting, cuff sling

300 yards - 5 rounds sitting, slow-fire, 5 rounds kneeling, slow- fire, cuff sling
10 rounds, rapid-fire, prone, cuff sling

500 yards - 10 rounds, slow-fire, prone, cuff sling

As I recall, the slow-fire strings were 10 minutes each and the rapid-fire were 20 seconds with a mandatory reload. All bulls-eye targets. 50 rounds total, possible score 250. 190 for Marksman, 210 for Sharpshooter and 220 for Expert.

The muzzle velocity of the 45-110 is about 1300 fps with the 550 grain bullet
