Quiet springer

Looking for some advice that I’m sure many of you have experience with. My son wants to get into airgun hunting, so I’d like to get him a springer he can practice with in the back yard. Will something like a XS12, or HW30 be quiet enough for a neighborhood? I currently have a .22 Disco with a LDC, and it’s borderline to loud.

HW30s are notoriously the best springers in the world.  It's the best first air rifle for anyone!  But that's just me!

It’s 100% legal, I’m just being respectful to the neighbors.

Best thing you can do is let your neighbors know what you're planning on doing up front. I told mine that I was intending to set up a safe shooting lane with a pellet trap and safe backstop setup so that any stray pellets hit my home and don't leave my property .

He thought it was a fun and good idea and now I can shoot without worrying about annoying or scaring anybody.

I purchased a XS-25 SFB in .177 from Flying Dragon Air Rifles and I ask Mike Melick to find a silencer for it and it's very quiet. The full tune by Mike is recommended. Call and talk to him. See link below.

Ed, my R7 is extremely quite.  I don't think my neighbors ever hear me shooting.  It's about a 75' on either side of my house.  One of my neighbors would definitely be over asking questions if he could hear me

Thank you, I am leaning toward an R7 or XS12 from fdar. I am fortunate to have good neighbors that don’t care that I shoot. I just try to be respectful and not make them listen to the constant “snap” from muzzle blast. I have already made a silent pellet trap.

Another vote for the HW30, assuming it has the power level you want for hunting. The next step up in power is the HW50 and it's still pretty backyard friendly. Same for the 35E. Although we have plenty of other springers, these get the lion's share of use.

As someone that beat this to death before buying - get an R7 or HW30 - no doubt!  The pellet hitting the target is louder than the gun, it's super accurate, and punches a pellet thru both sides of a veggie can at 20 yards - plenty to drop short range bunnies or squirrels.

Well, after speaking with mike at flying dragon, I ordered a full tune Xs12. If we like that I’ll order a R7 when he gets more in. Are the 12’s picky when it comes to pellets? Do they generally prefer a certain head size or weight?

Mikes tune up will probably make it for you....they really are good rifles at heart, just need a little help.


Sometimes I wonder...I thought the HW30 and CZ 624'swere really quiet. They certainly seemed like it compared to much more powerful PCP's (even with simple LDC's).

Then I adjusted a couple of PCP's down to HW30 power levels and used better LDC's.

Now the same springers seem loud in comparison.


BUT...all of them seem loud during the dead quiet of 2AM rat-hunt.

Judging by me when a young boy .., and besides 'quietness'. 

I would look your house and neighbors with Google Earth and point to him that .. if/when plinking, the "bullets" may go far beyond the intended target.

True...have had a couple of (lucky no humans,pets, or property damaged) accidents years ago that made me more aware of the possibilites.

First  hot-rod PCP...certainly miss-calculated the back stop requirments.   Found out just how quickly small clustered high powered groups can eat though the back stop and the layers of wood behind it.  NOW,I'd have to eat though the trap and a steel back plate.

Certainly miss-calculated just how far off a scope can be mounted/shofted from a drop. NOW,every thing gets at least a few shots at really short range to find out.

Always good to think in terms of even an "oops"  pellet's final destination staying witin your property lines.  Even low power...put a red mark or a "hicky" on a 4 year old, life is going to get various degrees of unpleasant for you.

I think you are going to come back with the question about an HW30.

When it arrives, get the .22 and skip the .177.  Mine is SUPERB!

I have both a tuned XS-25SFB, and a Diana 27S (Same class gun as the R-7/HW30). There's no way that any silencer will make the 25 anywhere near as quiet as the R-7. There is just too much mechanical noise/thunk (not buzz or twang), that won't be affected by any silencer.

I’ve had my R7/HW30 for over 30 years, and rebuilt it two years ago With a Vortek kit. It’s quiet, smooth, and very accurate. It’s a little low powered for hunting but would be fine for head shots on smaller rodents and for birds at back yard distances.
