Need a muzzle brake solution

i would like to add a muzzle brake to the bulldog pictured in my avatar.  It has a Neil C Reflex type slip on that is very effective.  This gun has 2 tubes and tunes.  with its regulated tube it is tuned for 15 shots in the 160fpe range.  With its unregulated tube and tune it does 3 shots a little over/under 300fpe...  Note, there is also a hammer/spring swap between the 2 tubes/tunes. 



The Neil C unit adds a little weight/length to the muzzle.  Even with a fairly stiff .500 TJ's barrel sleeved up to 19mm with CF, there is a significant POI change when removing the moderator.  I am wanting the ability to remove the moderator for times when it isn't needed, with a goal of maintaining a similar POI.  I understand it may not be perfect, and even if a similar POI doesn't pan out, no worries.  I mainly want to be able to shorten the gun and not make it look so "evil" when appropriate. 

In its quiet configuration, this gun is downright surgical out to 100 yards, moa groups are very repeatable across multiple shooters.  I hope to maintain this accuracy in "loud mode".

I've started with a piece of 5/8 x 1/2 4130.  I drilled and honed it to a nice slip fit on the barrel.  It adds about 5 oz of the wight back to the muzzle.  Now I would like to add some type of muzzle brake to the 4130 sleeve.  Something that will divert gases/sound rearward or to the side.  More noise at the towards the shooter, less downrange.  Something that I can install without having to send any parts off for machine work.

I have been looking at various PB muzzle brakes, that is likely what I will end up buying.  But, I don't have any hands on experience with these, I hope other board members can share their experience.   Whatever i buy, I'm sure I will have to make some modifications such as drilling it out for .357, etc.

FWIW, I run a muzzle break on my 284 16-18" bbl's 284 cal pistols, yes it is loud,
but it stops the recoil so I can use a standard rifle scope and NOT get bit in the face.

The more gills the better the effect on controlling the venting gases etc. I use/run this one,

I have the 3-4-5 gill models, the 5 gill is the best for me, in MHO.
When in doubt, get the longest/most gills, as then you can shorten as needed to fit your application...........

One important thing i have learned in the past 20+ years "designing" MB's (for powderburners) is: Make it symmetrical!!!
Ie. only went out the sides and up/down in equal amounts.
If you design it as not to vent down it will bend the barrel and cause up/down variations that is unexplicable.

Why a muzzlebrake at all on a low recoil airgun?

Why not simply a barrelweight that you strap onto your muzzle that "prebends" your barrel for same POI as the muffler?

Great info, thanks for sharing.  your comments about symmetry make sense to me. 

Why specify a muzzle brake vs a muzzle weight?  I really don't know other than that was the easiest thing to ask for, and would be readily available.  I agree with your assessment of it primarily serving as a weight to both pre-bend the barrel and attempt to mimic barrel harmonics between loud/quiet modes..

The 4130 sleeve only weighs 5oz, my moderator weighs 11.  The brake is intended to add a little more weight to the sleeve  I don't plan for it to weight exactly what the moderator weighs as overall length will be significantly shorter.  But I did want it to be a little closer...

Update on my email to  Ross Brakes.  Ross was quick to respond.  He does business old school---mail funds (even takes personal checks) and he will send the brake upon funds clearing.  I am ordering a 1" OD, 4 slot, unthreaded version in .357.  For $37 it is hard to beat.  I will be sending him a money order this afternoon.  I haven't owned paper checks in over 15 years now, lol...
