CMP 853 PITA re-assembly and scope question

I finally got around to the trigger mods.   I found the re-assembly took quite a lot of fiddling around but it'll probably be easier next time.   And there will be a next time as the trigger is not as nice as I hoped.   My question is;  I have an old like NIB Redfield Frontier 2X-7X kicking around and a set of rings that will work on the Daisy.   I'm talkin vintage 1973 maybe on the scope.   The scope does not have a parallax adjustment.   Is this likely to be a problem for 10M shooting?

Parallax is a much greater issue at close range than it is for distant shots.  Most fixed parallax scopes are set for a hundred yards though a few are set at fifty.

I have a 3-9x32 AO scope on one of my CMP 853s that works good.
The AO is needed for 10 to 25 yard shooting.

You can in theory get around the parallax issue for 10 meter shooting if you place your eye behind the scope in EXACTLY the same position for each and every shot, but with some guns and their stocks that is really tough to do and even when it is doable, it just adds another complication to your shooting. Under 25 yards, I only use a scope with an AO. For 10 meter work, use a scope with an AO. Save your vintage Redfield for longer distance shooting.

Thanks all for the input.   I guess I'll be looking for an AO scope.   Any suggestions?  Is a decent one available for under $150?   At my age with really bad eyes and a moderate case of shakeyness, maybe it doesn't matter that much.  But I sold a few PBs and I don't mind converting some of the proceeds to AG stuff.    Winter indoor AG rifle league at my club is open to pretty much anything in .177.  No restrictions on sights.   Some guys have fancy target  Anschutz,  some poor or cheap folks like me have a daisy.  Fun club stuff.

I have two CMP Daisy 853's.  One has the OEM sights and the sights on MC stocked 853 have been upgraded to the Avanti 753 sights.  Both stocks have been extended to an adult LOP.

I can't visualize an 853 with a scope on it.

I bought 6 CMP 853 rifles for our range to introduce people to 10M rifle.  They are a simple rifle to take apart and reassemble but, as you figured out, they aren’t straight forward and take some prior knowledge.  We also did the trigger job on all 6 and the triggers are still unimpressive.  That said they are a good value from CMP and quite frankly pretty darn accurate.  Replacement parts from Daisy are available and cheap.

Yeah the scope thing is what I'd want to address because I've got both smokeless powder and air rifle scopes on many of my air rifles--mostly break barrels.

If you have a nice LOW power "centerfire" scope like Leupold or Nikon or Bushnell or Burris they can ALL work very well atop a "short range" rifle, usually with the power level around 5 or 4X.  I've been able to get away with 6X at 30 yards with a Swarovsky having fast eye focus ocular; but the other scopes I mentioned work with 5X or lower with ease.

The thing I do to keep track of parallax is making sure my eye is centered and in full view of the scope's image on all sides to see how the reticle centers atop the rifle to "level" the rifle and shoot carefully without jerking the trigger.

I do have an incredible 4x fixed scope around $40: the Beeman 4X 32mm!  I use it atop my R9 .177 and it is working great!  The clarity of the scope is next to Swarovski to my own eyes!  You'll save a LOT of money if you get this scope!  I have this scope WITHOUT a ZR mount on the R9 .177, it never loses its zero, at least to date since over two years ago when I got it.

The 853 is one of my most fun to shoot rifles. I cant imaging mounting a scope on it. I use the aperture sight that came with it, didnt think I would like it because I had never gave one a chance. I do well out to 20 yards but got it mainly for 10 meters. Only draw back is not being able to see where the pellet hit, a scope would help there. I keep a 6x range finder at hand for that. For 114 bucks the 853 is a steal!

I love keeping the aperture sights too, in fact the sight picture mates up really well with a rifle I absolutely can’t shoot at home so it lets me practice plenty.

However, I think I’d like to have at least one more 853 just so I can throw a scope on one.

My old Redfield scope was shooting 5 inches low at 15 yards.   This is with the elevation adjustment as high as it would go.  I fear that the internal adjustment mechanism is gummed up from years of sitting.   I threw on a cheap Simmons 3x9 that was laying around and had no difficulty sighting that one in.   However the optical clarity of the Simmons is so horrible I'm not sure I'll be able to live with it.   Guess I'll still be looking for a new AG scope.

You might be able to adjust the objective lens on the Simmons.
Take the front ring off.
Turn the inside ring that has the 2 notches in it to make the image clear at 15 to 20 yards which is a good distance for the 853.
