I have a Ruger Black Hawk. It has enought power to take down squirrels, birds, rabbits, opossums, rats, muskrats, ect. I love it for the price ($100) Only problem is that it's not the most accurate. I've done some hunting with it last year when I got it and this year some. Only thing is that I would like somthing accurate so I can make clean, humane kills. I'm using the Crossman Pointed Hunting pellets. I use them because they're cheap, I can get them at Wal Mart, and that they have the power to take down the above mentioned animals. Should I change pellets? Whats a good scope for my gun? What aftermarket stocks are avalible for my gun? What upgrades should I do? Should I just sell it and buy a new one? Thanks

Change the pellets and upgrade the internals to a vortek kit, that will make her accurate, while you have her apart do a tune as well.

Definatly get better pellets. Jsb or beeman/h&n.

The scope i would recommend a 3-9 power with no ao on it. Just faster to get on target and less moving parts to break.

The vortek kits are very easy to install and come with everything you need. The tune is mostlyreplacing the spring and internals withthe vortek kit then deburring everything inside to make sure there are no sharp edgez that can damage the seal. To do that you can use small fine files or a dremel with fine stone and go slow and easy.

That would be less expensive than buyin a new gun and you would be super impressed when your done. If you just have to have a new hunting gun i recommend the 22 cal 350. Thats my go to. But they require alot of practice to master. Might just try tuningg the one you have.

Theres nothing wrong with the pellets. Some guns shoot them better than others, as with ALL pellets. Keep searching for the pellets that YOUR gun shoots the best.

Practice Practice Practice,and know how your gun is going to shot at all distances.Those pellets are just fine as long as your gun likes them.Hunting with any spring gun is a challenge,but can be done with great success if you know your guns behavior.Good luck.

Start with changing pellets, try the Crosman hollow points walmart should have them. in my experience i havent found a gun yet that likes pointed pellets.

Start with good pellets for sure, and then a GRT trigger from CharlieDaTuna. ( see link at the top of this forum)

Pointed pellets work OK in lower powered rifles at shorter ranges.

But when you get up to the power level of the Blackhawk, and at ranges beyond 20 yards, they tend to open up quite a bit.

Try JSB Exact RS, Exact, Exact Express. Domed pellets retain more of their energy at range, and are more accurate than pointeds too.

The trigger should come way before the Vortek kit, IMO. Even with the stock spring, you'll shoot a lot better with a good trigger. I think you'd need to buy or build some specialized tools to tune the rifle and replace the spring; a spring compressor at a minimum.

If you don't mind spending some money, go to www.straightshooters.com and pick up one of their pellet samplers for your caliber. The .177 sampler has 25 each of 32 different pellets in weights from 5.56 grains (gn) to 15.74 gn. The .22 caliber has 25 each of about 18 different pellets from 13.0 gn to 25.9 gn. You don't want to use anything in a .177 springer rifle below 7.0 gn or higher than 10.5 gn. Below 7.0 gn can blow your piston seal and maybe break your spring and above 10.5 can shorten the life of your spring. I use five pellets of each type and see how they group. Find the one that works best for you at the range you can effectively put five of five in a 1 inch circle. I think it was about $35 plus shipping. Seems expensive for 800 pellets, but not when you consider the cost of buying 250 to 500 at a time and paying for shipping. I was surprised to find that my Benji Titan (completely stock) HATES JSB pellets. I can barely keep five on a standard 4 X 4 target, while the RWS SuperDomes, SuperPoints, and SuperHPoints basically cut "one ragged hole" at 20 yd. I still have six more pellet types to try, so the RWS might not even be the best for me. I haven't even started testing my .177 Whisper with the .177 pellet sampler yet.

I do not believe tuna triggers work in the black hawk as it is a clone of the 34 from Diana... tuna triggers work in theobon style triggers.

Yeah I was just looking and didnt see one the would work. I only saw one that said it DIDNT work for rws. Unless you can tweak one of those to work?
As for springs, is there a company that sells different ones, or are these something that is found at a local store?

Spring compressor is a good idea. I got away with a bar clamp but it was a PIA. Im still gonna try makin a couple blocks out of wood to see if that will help putting it back together.

Vortek makes kits for the 34 which fits the black hawk... maccari ( Air rifle headquarters) sells spring kits and springs for the 34... which fit the black hawk and they have different ones for different power levels.

There is a Centerpoint scope sold at most Walmarts that will work just fine for your needs.

There is nothing wrong with the Crosman Pointed pellets. Unfortunately they are not the best pellet in your gun. You need to try other pellets to find a better one. Wal-Mart also sells the Crosman CPHP which many people, myself included, have had good luck with them. You could order some pellets from Pyramyd Air (buy 3 and 1 free) to get an assortment.
Practice to improve your shooting and limit your hunting shots to the range that your skill limits.

Try JSB (14.3 and 15.9) and Beeman / H&N Field Target Trophy or Field Target Specials. Predator Polymag are great hunting pellets, but they are a bit pricey, and may not be the most accurate in your rifle. Crosman Premier domes are good as well as RWS Superdomes. I personally would avoid the Gamo PBA type alloy pellets.

You should order one of the pellet samplers that come with like 4 to 8 different pellets, try pyramid for them, i would just call them and tell them what you want, they have a special on , if you order 4 tins of pellets you get the 4th one for free, that might work to. Every air rifle shoots diff. pellets differently, so one blackhawk might shoot one pellet great and in yours it might not so you have to try a few before you find 2 or 3 it likes.
