P17 rear sight tweaks

Shooting the P17, I noticed some sideways play in the elevation blade as well as the windage detent not really holding well. It looked like there was at least .010" gap on each side of the elevation blade. With only a 7" sight radius, that's worth going after. I took the sight apart, wrapped some aluminum tape around the elevation blade and burnished the side. It is tighter but still pivots up and down. The elevation screw also does not have much of a detent and tends to walk a bit. Instead of the crazy glue rear sight fix https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=66929.0, I just use a piece of black duct tape to hold the screw head in position.
For the windage screw, I just wrapped some teflon plumbing tape on the M3 thread to tighten it up a bit.

For those wanting to take the rear sight apart, the springy little things that want to disappear are the clip on the windage screw, the elevation spring and to a lesser extent the detent pin/spring under the head of the windage screw. To remove the clip, push on the head of the windage screw so the clip comes out of its recess, and then have a plan for containing it when you spring it loose. On mine, the elevation spring did not want to fly off, also the nut drops off on the underside when you remove the screw. The windage detent pin does not fly out but can drop out with the spring if you turn the pistol over.

Overall both of these helped and are minimal or no cost. There is still some play possible because the windage sight blade is a loose fit in the elevation blade. Maybe some more Al tape.

P17 was the best $8.00 I have ever spent. With a careful trigger tweek it shoots amazing. I started working on the rear sight also. I found that rounding the outside rough edges made the gun more comfortable to cock. With my poor eyes getting worse, I finally replaced the rear sight on one gun with a very small red dot by ADE, and took off the rear sight completely for safe keeping.

Yeah, I'm forever trying to figure out which reading glasses let me see the front sight. I you noticed in the first photo, I covered the razor blade rail with stylish black duct tape and I try not to touch the rear sight during cocking.

3.28 mm OD
8.20 mm L
.5 mm wire

I tried a typical pen spring, it was too wide. Maybe a spring out of a tire valve. Otherwise Hobby Lobby has .020 music wire, it may be easier just to wind one.

I use the $9.99 Daisy red dot and slide it all the way forward.
It has 2 light intensity settings and it works good.
I may put a Umarex RWS 1.7x20 scope on one of my P17s also.
I have 10 P17s so I will end up with 4 or 5 different sights.

Got some replacement springs on Amazon for a fair price ( compared to some places )

+1 on the Daisy Red Dot.    Seems more rugged than the big Gamo/Crosman ones, and 2 settings!
