Hatsan Stock Repair

In a moment of mental lapse, I wrenched the action out of my Hatsan 1000 Vortex.
This obliterated the front mounting screw holes and splintered a bunch of the inside of the stock at that point.
I have cleaned up the area and made new wood doublers for lack of a better word, that will be glued to the inside of
the stock. This will make necessary drilling new screw holes.
But, that will not be a simple task, as the oak doublers will not provide a flat surface at the bottom of the angled holes in the stock.
I fear that sending in a drill which matches the diameter of the holes in the stock will cause the bit to wander when it hits the oak at the angle.
I am considering turning plugs out of walnut or another hard wood to fit the holes in the stock, but cutting the end at the angle to match the mating point with the oak doubler. I can pre-drill the screw hole thru the axis on the lathe,
That should keep the hole centered.
I can then cut the dowel squarely and glue into the hole in the stock.
Sound reasonable?
My other notion is to drill a pilot thru the doubler (using the wood dowel plug to center the hole and keep in line) and then open it up to the diameter of the larger existing hole in the stock.
Then I can run the hardwood dowel all the way to the action. That would eliminate screw passing thru thin layers of wood.
Any comments or suggestions??

I'd drill a pilot hole.
A picture of what you are trying to do might help. Maybe.

I agree with Tim. I was in the Machine trade for 50+yrs. Pre-drill is the way to go. IMO Craig

On the lathe,I drilled a plot hole in the walnut dowel rod I turned down tke OD to fit the angled screw holes in the front of the stock.
I glued the dowel in position in the angled holes, leaving the square-cut end of the dowel to make the flat bottom of the hole in the stock, Then I trimmed the inside flush and glued in the doublers.
After shaving the top contour of the doublers to match the stock (where the piston tube nestled in) using the holes thru the dowes as a drill guide,
I drilled thru the doublers.
Things lined up way better than I had anticipated.....had to ream out 1 hole just a bit............
Anyway, back together and shooting fine!
