Looked for my old thread but could not find it.
I mistakenly used the improper loctite and rounded out my bulldog barrel set screw.

Tried these lil dudes out.
One side is a left hand drill bit.
Other is the extractor.
$13 at Lowes

The heat from the left hand drilling cause the loctite to loosen up.
Used a drill and the extractor side and came right out.......with some force though.
Use a slow speed high torque drill.

I can now install my transfer port and detuned for efficiency.

Good for you! Always nice when these things work out. I have had mixed results with reverse drill bits and extractors so nice to see when they work.

Are these carbide?  Will these work for 1/8 drill bits stuck iin the middle of a 6061 fill end?   Need to find a fix for that in the future. I managed to get 2 drill bits stuck in the same center hole of the same fill end.

Nothing beats patience when it comes to fixing something you value.

For drill bits stuck in stuff: you have several choices.
1: I've never been able to successfully weld a bit to extract, but I've seen folks who can. 
2: very careful work with a hardened punch to break and extract pieces of drill bit
3: left hand bits using at slow RPM in a drill press
4: canned heat- used a couple times with steel bits in aluminum alloys.  Aluminum expands at a faster rate but you gotta be mindful of heat treatments and the application
5: skip the heartache and buy a replacement fill end

Glad you got it out. I had the very same thing happen with a 1st gen stormrider. It was a little ugly by the time I got it out but I gave that gun away a while back. Not I go very easy on those set screws and I don't use any Loctite on them just because I wont go through it again. Much easier to check them every so often and make sure they are still tight.

Yeah.  I don't want to mess up aluminum with heat.  Along those lines Ive already mangled it trying to get it out. It was basically a plug I was making to test my gun.  I am plugging the hole and adding a fill probe in an adjacent hole.  Dont want to hijack.

I wonder will these work on broken taps?  The listing for these online looks like carbide.  Ive had my share of tap breaks too.  $12 is pretty cheap if that is the case.

I have a similar set that are TiN coated, from Craftsman. They have saved my butt more than once.

Back in my Mechanic days I amazed many other Techs with my ability to extract bolts. I would always say...
"You know how I got so good? I broke / stripped too many!"


A broken bit or tap is a WHOLE 'nother story.
Harder than a honeymoon wiener.... can you spell EDM?

The good news is aluminum expands faster than steel. So if you apply light heat (propane torch, not Oxy-Acetylene) and act fast... before the heat sets into the steel, it gives you some "wiggle Room"

I have expensive Proto and Irwin extractors.
On this small 5/16 set screw they could not compete.

This left hand bit/extractor combo works great.

I know the feeling once you get those out. You don't need an extractor untill you need one.

I handle it differently, I would never locktite the barrel retention screws..  I remove my shroud/barrel assembly by loosening those two screws 3 revolutions accessed by holes in the receiver clam shell. The entire assembly then easily slides off.

In the many times I have done this, as I have two shroud/barrel assemblies, I have never found them to be loose.

I broke the head off a caliper bolt when I was doing some work on my jeep.

3 hours later I gave up and went to Napa for an extractor kit. Took another hour but I was so relieved when I finally got it out.

Can't imagine how aggravating a small grub screw would be to get unstuck.
