Need some input from you guys. I have been reading your threads and I would like to step up to big bore.
I want something to get me started even used. I want to hunt hogs and yotes. so also recommended fpe for ethical kills.
$'s are important so all your knowledge is greatly appreciated

How much do you have to spend total? Do you have carbon fiber tanks to fill with, or will you be using a pump most of the time?

If you are using a pump then a SamYang is the way to go. Most other bigbores take a much higher fill pressure requiring tanks.

Thanks for the info what fill pressures are we talking about?
I looked at the sam yang's too bad not made in USA.
They are old west looking.

Dave i think i'd have to say the sam yang too. They are about the only viable choice right now short of a used gun or a custom gun or a rogue. They are a bit strangly made, but they grow on you looks wise and they are quite well made and finished. Best of all they shoot really really well with the right ammo, very accurate and work great in the 2400-2800psi range. This means you get 3 or 4 full power shots and then power starts dropping. Double res gives me almost 10 full power shots but my 201 is dialed in a bit different, you would see similar out of the new double tubes probably. No problem on pumping them, i started out using scuba but now am pumping them all and kinda like it. With the Pyramid discount the price isn't bad either. J

If money is not a issue and you want USA . Then this is as good as it is going to get at 3000 psi and above . Marvin

Yep. Pretty respectable power even set on low, which is the setting that will work with a 3000psi fill. That'll be my next bigbore no question.

Though everyone should at some point try out a tuned SamYang as well. Very accurate rifles that can show you just how useful and effective 250-350fpe really is!

Yes .But if we all would have saved and started with the XP .Then we would not need to buy another replacement rifle . Do not forget the uppers can be changed to change calibers . Then again I know of a few that have interchangeable barrels for their 201 and 909 Koreans . But he did say US and a Korean as good as they are will never match the power of the XP . Marvin

The other good thing about the Ranger 45 from XP, is that if decide you like the concept of a big bore, and as money allows, you can change out your pump for a scba tank and start filling to higher pressures, ie., 4500 PSI and have a 600 FPE potential.

Make sure before you do that you have a place to shoot your monster gun, these guns are not backyard friendly, sort of like setting off a trap load in a 20 gauge as far as noise is concerned.

They are very simply designed i that you can completley disassemble one with four allen wrenches.

There are quite a number of commercial cast bullets in .452 on the market. I have shot the 385 grain HP form Mr Hollowpoint and had excellent accuracy, and I have shot HP's from the maker of Surefire slugs, and some of his other offerings.

But I have to say I am not a fan of HP's for game as large as Elk, where penetration is far more important. In my experience the 45 cast slug is far more dependant on having a big flat metplate for shocking and killing power, having said that, I have only killed 5 elk with bullets I cast myself, however I have take a considerable amount of mule deer with naked bullets, as a result I am pretty jaded towards SWC bullet profiles.

The XP Ranger lends itself to lighter bullets on mid to low power and gives superb accuracy at what we would normally associate with factory 45 LC ballistics, not the mild cowboy loads, but the old 225 at 900 FPS that made the round famous.

For a little over $200.00 you can by a basic lead pot and a custom mold and handles and from then on, you are dependant upon only your source of air and alloy.

I shoot the lighter bullets in my Gargoyle that is a brother to the XP . I have this mold which is a obsolite mold now and it is a excellent bullet in my rifle .
