Well, here is the secret I've been busting to share with all of you.... my brand new DAQ .308 Exile....
.... Back in January when Dennis Quackenbush opened his draw for 50 of his Outlaw Bigbore DAQ Airguns I got Joe McAllister of MuzzleMack to enter the draw for me.... When the draw was made, he got on the list, and several months later got the call from Dennis that "his" rifle was ready.... I fired off the money to Joe who sent it on to Dennis.... and when the rifle arrived in Idaho, Joe sent me the Serial Number to register it.... Another month of waiting, I got the registration, had Joe ship it to Oroville WA and today I went down to pick it up.... All I can say is WOW !!! .... WHAT A BEAUTY !!!
The rifle is a "Standard" grade and the stock is rated a #3.... some nice figuring and highlights in the grain as you can see.... The bluing is nicer than anything I have, deep and even.... a true work of art as far as I am concerned.... It has the standard DAQ action with a separate cocking lever for the hammer, and comes with a male Foster and Weaver mounts.... It weighs 7 lbs. 13 oz. as it sits.... The gun is intended for cast lead bullets of 115-130 gr., similar to a .30 M-1 Carbine.... and is touted to have 4-5 shots at ~850 fps, hammering out about 200 FPE....
Above is a comparison of pellets.... .177 cal 8.4 gr., .22 cal 15.9 gr. and .25 cal 25.4 gr. JSB Exacts, a 120 gr. .308, and a 9mm EunJin 78 gr..... I've ordered a Bushnell Legend 5-15 x 40 from sniper Dan to mount on it.... Once that arrives and I can spring some time to get out into the bush I'll give a report on how it performs.... I'm sure it's wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too loud to fire in my backyard, even with the great neighbours I've got....

Motel's too busy to get out to my camp and try it out.... Even with my great neighbours I think it's a bit large for our sleeply little town....

WOO HOO!!!.... I finally got out to our camp to try out the Exile.... Here are my first impressions....
It's LOUD !!!
It's a AIR HOG !!!
It needs the scope shimmed a LOT !!!
It's pretty accurate for not broken in yet....
I put about 60 rounds through it today.... about 15 each of the Lee 120 gr. Round Nose (sized and unsized) and the Lee 113 gr. Round/Flat (sized and unsized).... The velocity was remarkably similar between the 4 types of boolits.... but that could be because they all weighed virtually the same (118-119 gr).... I filled to 3000 psi and shot 3 shots per fill by which time the pressure was down to 1800 psi (YUP, 400 psi per shot!).... The first shot went 835 fps, second shot about 785, and the third shot about 745.... averaging about 785-790 fps depending on boolit.... That means that the average FPE is ~160 FPE and the first shot is running ~185 FPE.... To me, this means that the hammer spring is too heavy or the fill pressure is too low.... but I guess the intention is for the first (kill) shot to be the most powerful.... Unfortunately, this means it not worthy air like a house on fire....
It's hard to measure the volume of the air reservoir.... but the rear part of the tube (where the hammer is) is 1.125" OD x 0.065" wall.... The tube appears to be made in two halves joined just in front of the hammer.... There are a couple of "dents" on the bottom of the reservoir about 2" ahead of the join.... I assume that is either preventing the valve from sliding forward.... or is a tamper-proofing to prevent valve removal.... I really have NO idea.... I can't even be sure if the wall thickness of the reservoir is the same as the rear (hammer) portion.... but from the front dent, the tube is about 20" long, so I used 15.5 CI for the volume.... This results in an efficiency of just under 0.4 FPE/CI (42 Barcc/FPE).... No wonder its LOUD !!!
I tried sighting the gun in, and couldn't adjust the scope up enough to get a zero at 15 yards.... The DAQ has a barrel band you adjust by twisting at the front of the air reservoir to get an approximate windage (a great idea BTW) so that was easy.... get it close and lock it in place with the 3 set screws.... I had to use 2-3 MilDots holdover at 50 yards to test the groups.... but that went relatively well.... The best group I got, 1.20" CTC, was with the 120 gr. RN unsized, followed at 1.25" by the sized.... The unsized 113 gr. FN (which is the same boolit with a 3/16" diam. flat on the front) shot 1.37" and the sized shot 2.37".... I think the first three are decent groups at 50 yards.... and as I become more familiar with the gun and tweak it a bit they will likely tighten to about 1" or so.... To correct the scope alignment I plan to machine about 0.040" off the top of the front Weaver mounting block.... That should put me in the middle of the adjustment range on the scope....
Well, this is my first experience with a Big-Bore.... and it's an interesting beast to be sure.... The air usuage is about twice what the testing article on the Quackenbush website stated.... but they also had the second shot the fastest, and slower than mine.... They were getting 5 shots on a 3200 psi fill, so I'm thinking I may have to reduce the hammer spring preload a bit to reduce the air consumption.... Any suggestions from those with experience on an Exile would be more than welcome....
