JSAR externally adjustable reg

Hi all!  For those of you that have a JSAR externally adjustable reg, does it need a spanner wrench to use while pressurized?  If so, what size spanner?  I'm excited to get my build done, but don't want to mar the the reg while doing so...  Anyhoo, TIA!!

Should have come with the tool to adjust it. Look in the packaging it came in.

Yes, under pressure it requires the wrench. I bought one from Hajimoto and it came with a spanner wrench. The free one I finally got from JSAR to go with my Raptor, came with no wrench. With no pressure it turns easy.

Yeah, it definitely didn't come with a wrench.  I bought direct from JSAR.  *sigh*  I'll email JSAR...     I really hope this was just a mistake made due to the haste to put the reg into the mail.  I'm going to be very upset if I have to buy the wrench that is required for use...

Good luck not scratching the adjuster!  The spanner wrench that came with my Raptor did not have any sort of protective finish on it and the adjuster wheel scratched very easily.

I kind of expected that, actually...  But the scratches from a dedicated spanner are probably far less bad as using an incorrect tool...

I just got mine from JSAR and haven't even tried it yet. It did not come with a wrench. I wonder if a strap wrench can turn it under pressure without marring it.

It looks like some holes for a tool to leverage on would have been a better design than the knurling.

But there's slots for a spanner- is your adjustment collar knurled?

Also, I'm noticing a bad trend- direct from JSAR no adjustment wrench (none on the website either), but from Hajimoto, you get a wrench?!  *sigh*

I'm expecting a no, but I emailed Hajimoto to see if I could buy just a spanner from him.  I'm also going to test to see if an AF wrench will work.    AF wrench absolutely does NOT work...

What knurling? It has slots machined in the adjustment for the spanner.

Yes, yes slots. I just glanced at it through the plastic bag it came in. My point was that if it is so hard to turn under pressure, maybe holes would have been easier to adjust against and not leave marks.

My raptor shipped without the wrench as well. The wrench for AR buffer tube castle nut wrench will work too, but they really don't fit that well and will scratch up the finish too. I emailed Jacob at JSAR and asked for the wrench, he responded and shipped it out within a week of contacting him.
That was before Covid-19 BS though.

Maybe an odd question- how do you "size" a spanner wrench?  In the event Hajimoto won't sell me just a wrench (I have a sneaking suspicion that JSAR doesn't have/deal with the wrench), I'll want to get one.  TIA for any help.  I'll also be trying to look up the info on my end as well, though I'm not even sure how to search for the info...

After a little digging, I got some good info-

I'm after a "hook" spanner wrench.  They're sized by the O.D. of the collar, so says McMaster Carr.  I measured my reg's collar, and I'm looking at 1.24"-ish or, 31.5 mm.  McMaster has a hook spanner that is good for 30-32 mm, PN: 6975A14.  I'll snag one of those if Hajimoto won't sell me one.  I'd much rather have a wrench that has square prongs that fit into the slots, and engages 2-3 slots at once, but c'est la vie...

This is good news!!  I'm going to wait until I get a response from both of them before buying the hook spanner from McMaster.  I'm a little annoyed though- multiple people have received these regs direct from JSAR with no wrench...  Why?  The wrench is pretty much needed to use the reg, so why not just include it?  Why the rigmarole to get a necessary tool?  No one said anything about paying for one, which I hope is the case.  *sigh*  Maybe I'm making a mountain from a mole hill.  But if the reg needs a tool to adjust it, just include the wrench.  If it's a case of not having the wrench on hand due to this Covid-19 business, then either email or slip a note into the package saying so.
