Mohawk Limburger Cheese Spread

I'm sorry but I have learned that Kraft has discontinued this staple after 40 some years. I haven't been able to find it in stores for the last couple of years. You know what I mean if you're from the Great Lakes area, alright- Mohawk brand Limburger cheese spread. Gone like health care, gone like the wind....
I always blamed the Kalifornia Tasteless Cheese Mafia, but apparently Kraft themselves decided you would all like some nice tasteless Colby Jack or whatever abomination they have shredded and blister-packed, instead of this family tradition.
My father started my lifelong love affair with stinky cheeses with this, and Liederkranz. It is truly the Sheridan of stinky cheese snacks, a working man's guilty pleasure made in America.
Does anyone remember this guilty pleasure but me? Wouldn't it be great with some pickled pig's feet, or (gasp) TURKEY GIZZARDS and a cold one right about now? Maybe on some "New York Style" garlic bagel crisps?
Please... if you care about stinky cheese, and the children, won't you please speak out?

One time my father was eating some (exiled by Mom to the kitchen) and our dog came begging, so he put a big gob onto a plate and sat it down on the floor. The dog sniffed it, stared a few seconds, then lowered his head and rolled in it. Stink!!! It was the ONLY time I ever saw that dog climb INTO the bath tub. Honest truth!
One of my aunts was a real pistol in her youth (and later, too). She was at some local bar like a Moose lodge, etc, and got into an argument with another tough cookie, as they were called in those days. The broad said something obviously offensive to auntie, so she just reached over for the plate of Limburger on the counter and smashed it right into the woman's hair. I think that's a better use than actually eating the stuff.
Oh, yeah. And it was GREAT to smear on the radiator of some smart ***'s car. Especially in winter. Will I miss it? Not.

I have not had it in year's Dave!!! But I remember well strong black rye bread, a slice of tomato, big slice of onion an a slathering of that good old stinkin cheese WITH a ice cold Black Label Beer(Hey Mabel Another Black Label) with my Father. We grew the "mator's" an onion's ourself's an that was the treat for helping the OldMan weeding all day.DANG I AM A TRUE REDNECK!!! Let the "wee bitty" little men eat whimpy cheese on little cracker's with wine. You know Dave my nose has been broke so many time's I don't think the smell would even get through anymore an it is getting near the end of the growing season Think I will go find up some Limburger an have one more sandwich for my Pappy(Now if I could only find a cold Black Label???).

Limburger cheese? Man I haven't thought of that in years. My grandpa used to eat it. I remember him sharing some with me and I liked it. We'd eat limburger cheese and braunswieger on crackers. Whew, high times!

I remember my Mom making my Dad keep the Limburger cheese in the back porch. He could only have it during the cold weather months or it wouldn't "keep" out there. She would not allow it in the refrigerator because of the smell.
Dad would eat some different things like: headcheese, braunswieger, smelt, smoked whitefish, sardines, blood sausage and cow tongue. I also remember, when a particular craving would strike it would a road trip to the favorite cheese shop (never mind you drove past 3 or 4 to get to the best one) or off to Port Washington (Lake Michigan) for the smoked fish.

I remember all of the above. There was also Beer Cheese which was Limburger I am sure. And Black Label, orginal from Canada and then bottled here. Limburger tasted much better than it smelled. And tunaboat I was raised in Milwaukee, two blocks from Schlitz and been to Port Washington many times. Isn't that the problem with people today, afraid something will hurt their nose!

I remember that stinky cheese when I was a kid...
My uncle used to love it. I was the only one who liked it besides my uncle and would sneak in the refrig sometimes and take some...
My aunt would fuss at him when he brought it home...
He would always let me have some when he was sitting in his old recliner whatching Gun Smoke on Friday nights...
Beer in one hand and Limburger in the other...
Also loved to chew on pickled pigs feet..

My mother also made my father keep his Limburger on the back porch. Only my eldest brother ever ate it with him. I will try anything, but stuff with that spoiled milk or rotten flesh taste like tripe, blue cheese, limburger, or yogurt are on my "taste like S_ _T list."

I like regular Limburger, too. Try it on pumpernickel as well as rye, and don't forget those onions.
But this is the Stuff whose passing I lament:
Like Limburger Lite.
D**n the cheese cartels and their iron grip on the American palate. There are generations of Americans now who think of cheese as a texture, rather than a flavor. So sad.
