Dressing Up an HW30

Got myself an HW30 awhile back and am very happy with the way the gun shoots. Right out of the box it was smooth and quiet with a nic trigger. I may eventually tinker with it but not yet. But what I would like some ideas on is spiffying it up a bit. Does anybody have any suggestions or pictures of what they may have done to theirs? It is finished respectably as it comes but it is sort of plain.

I tried stipling a Chinese rifle around the pistol grip I had a while back. It turned out really nice. The tools needed were a foredom tool and small diamond ball bits. That Chinese wood was super hard. Then I stained that area very dark and finished the whole thing up. Really the hardest part was cutting in a clean outline to do the stipling in.

Rowan set-back trigger.  Brass safety buttons.  Custom /semi-custom stock.  All easily doeable.  How much money you want to spend?

The ultimate stock for an HW30,,,,,,,,, a walnut tyrolean.   There is one hiding somewhere in a piece of walnut.  Hope you can find it before I do.

Aaaaaaah. Money!!! Not real sure at the moment but I might have to do it in steps. Getting that Beeman stock might be a start. Then maybe do a little personal refinishing on that before I install it. Peep sights are probably a no go for these old eyes. I had them on a .22 PB rifle and had to finally give up.

Some neat suggestions. That trigger looks nice but may be a last option at that price. I would prefer to invest effort rather than a lot of money but I know sometimes you have to swallow hard.

Just looking for ideas right now.

The R7 Deluxe stock is definitely a nicety, but not a necessity.

What Weihrauch delivers right out of the box is just about right for most people. I was just showing you the extremes, especially the V-Mach trigger. You can do a very minor tweak of the Rekord trigger that will yield you similar results.

I will suggest what most others here will, and that is to just shoot it as is for a while. Say, about a thousand pellets or so. Let it settle in. It may turn out that you decide to nothing at all with it. Don't let all those other "must change this thing" thoughts get into your head.

Do some people immediately jump right in to a new HW30 and change it up? Yes. I have. But it was for a very good reason and I knew what I was doing for the purpose intended. I took a brand new HW30S, straight from Krale, and put in a Vortek PG3HO spring and Vacseal piston seal. Even the spring itself was modified (cut one coil shorter) in order to achieve its intended purpose, which was to deliver a very nice, smooth shooting, accurate rifle to a person who has a shoulder problem.

That being said, I also own three unmodified HW30's from the mid '70's, two of which have the original leather piston seals. The only one of those that I've even messed with is the one with the sling, using a newer stock as a "donor" so as not to ruin the originality of the stock that came with it. That rifle is my ARH HW30S-X.

These rifles really need nothing at all. Unless you want bling, and bling costs $$.

A nice spring kit will help. It's like replacing the original shocks on your sports car with KYB's. Much nicer feel all around.

A personalized trigger tune will help as well, but really, after doing a dozen or so Rekord trigger tunes myself, just a proper cleaning, relube and adjustment is all that is necessary.

Bling does nothing to improve the rifle other than the mental aspect of it. A nicer stock, a silencer, all of that sort of thing is just something to make it seem "better' in the hands of the beholder.

I can shoot just as well with my most bare-bones vintage '70's unmodified, leather sealed HW30 as I can with my blinged out, scoped or peeped, springed-up, silenced or not, newest 2019 model HW30.

As you said, I suggest doing it in steps, as you think necessary or preferable.

A little goes a long way. Start with a trigger clean/lube. To me, the trigger is the most important part to accuracy. And when I mentioned a "personalized" trigger tune above, I meant for you to do it to your liking.

Do keep an eye out for the cocking link galling/grinding issue though, and stay on top of the stock screw tightness. they tend to loosen up.

Let us know if you need further advice on that, or any other aspect.

But now I actually LIKE the original stocks because they got lighter and darker in time to grow more flare on their own!

Do you have a machine shop, lathe, etc...  if no and no money honey all you can do is shoot the sucker.  Practice, practice, practice.

That is a handsome stock. Did you make it yourself? Is it walnut? Was it made from a blank, or was it semi-finished like James Maccari sells?

Why is your peep sight mounted so far forward?

The peep has the twilight apature.  It's larger so you can mount it forward, it works like a ghost ring.
The stock was made by Scott Blair, 3 kinds of wood and hand checkering.  I have the Beeman sight hole cover, and a silver trigger guard.  It was tuned by Billy Kizzy.  And purchased from Kingfish, John Chippis.  Ask me how it shoots.

If going price for a replacement stock is $149.99 for a plain jane Beech stock, I'd really hate to see how much they'd be asking if they used better quality wood. I know my Hatsans are no match in build quality compared to my German rifles, but my Model 95's and Webley Tomahawks (I now have all 4 back) all had/have very pretty chunks of Turkish Walnut for stocks under that blahhh factory finish and are gorgeous refinished. Ask Kirk, he's done a few himself and knows

That said, I've wandered some looking for custom made stuff  and unless you want to drop $300+ for something (Custom Stocks in the UK comes to mind: https://www.customstock.co.uk/customshop/ ) trying to refinish what it came with is the way less expensive option which still brings into play trying to refinish Beech which is a pain. Again, ask Kirk, he knows...lol

I like the hw30s with the plain Jane stock just fine. Paying$150 more to change the stock to the better stock, it makes more sense just to buy an r7 to begin with.

The hw30s deluxe at AOA is $289.99. is just about $40 more than getting the regular hw30s from Krale shipped at about $250.

If I wanted a nicer stock with the rifle, I think it's better to just start by getting one like say the laminated editions from AOA or the R7 or hw30s deluxe version. You end up saving a lot more money in the end.

You sure took the fun out of my daydreams about a pretty stock. But I get it. Nice stock work costs money. I have shopped around enough for stocks for various rifles over the years and pretty ain't cheap. I also don't find the stock on my HW30 to be ugly just a bit on the plain side.
