H&N Grizzly slugs vs Flashpup

I don't know how I missed the thread Manny put up about the Winchester not liking the Grizzlies. I ended up ordering a tin and holy moly...I'd be lucky if 1 in 3 shots actually hit a 12x12 target box. 

For anyone with a .357 Winchester, proceed with caution when using slugs. Mine does not like slugs at all. She sure loves her JSBs, though.

I don't know if .357 Win is different from Evanix but .357 Evanixes do acceptable groups with light bullets.

If I believe correctly, the Winchester is a .357 Blizzard or Rainstorm. I envy your groupings with the slugs. 

I tried slugs similar to what you are using, and they were flat out dangerous. 3 shots didn't even hit a 12in target box.

Until you guys start obtaining slugs, or size slugs to fit your choke, or grooves, any accuracy is pure blind luck.


We slug shooters have been telling you this for years. For good reason!

So Knife...

Say I have an 86gr EPP/UG. Would I push it through the barrel and then use it again? Or would I measure it (after pushing it through the barrel) and then try ordering slugs in that size? I think this barrel is choked, so I was thinking about either 1) getting a new unchoked barrel, or 2) figuring out where the choke is and then having a machine shop trim off the choked area.

I'd like for this girl to shoot slugs accurately. My new-to-me Bullboss and my Sumatra are already shooting slugs quite accurately, so I'd like for the big girl to come to the party.

Yep, push thru and measure. Afraid pushing thru the bbl and then shooting them will not work unless you can index the bull groves exactly the same. Not very likely. LOL!


Noe sells sizers for 9.99 each. A simple way to size for testing if you do not have a press, is to use a wooden dowel smaller than the sizer and tap the slug thru it with a bit of lube.


Yep, easy to remove the choke. Have you  checked the twist yet?

Thanks, Knife! As for measuring twist...how would I do that? I'm pretty green to this stuff.

To check twist, use a tight patch on a cleaning rod, push it thru the bore and measure how many inches the cleaning rod takes to make a full complete rotation.  That distance will be your twist rate.

I think most slugs are collecting dust on the shelf because they are the wrong size, NEVER under sized slugs, try to get the slugs .0005 to .001 over the groove diameter.

Pushing the slug through from the muzzle will only tell you the choke measurement.  They need to be pushed down the barrel from the breech, halfway then pushed back and out of the breech to get the barrels groove diameter.

Groove diameter is the Portion that is removed when the rifling is cut, it is the portion on the bullet that is forced into the rifling grooves, it is the raised  surface on the slug after you push it into the barrel.

To get the choke diameter you will need to push it all the way through and out of the barrel.

Unless you do all of this, your better off with pellets.

Unless you have a accurate caliper you are wasting your time.  My first airgun mold was made  eight or nine years ago by LBT, lacking an accurate caliper, I slugged the barrel, carefully packed the slug in cotton and sent it to  the mold maker.
