1701P Possibilities

Got a great deal on a 1701P that I am having to put all new o-rings in.  So this may be a new project carbine.  If I can get what I want out of it.  So here are my questions.
1. I am looking for 18fpe and min of 8 shots.  Is this possible with this Gun?
2. What would changing to a 1720T barrel, TP enlarging, and tuning do to this goal.
I know its not a prod, but for what I paid its going to be an awesome project gun.

Stock, it is a low powered pistol, 3-4FPE, and at max hammer pre-load and max throw, won't come close to 18FPE.  Even a stock 1720T will not do 18FPE. 

I have done minor mods to 1720T's and got 15FPE for 21-23 shots.  So, think your power and shot goal is possible, but will take some valve mods, along with TP, and barrel port.  The Es might be higher than 4%, though.

As a carbine, unlike the Prod/1720T, the 1701P should fit Boyds stocks inletted for a Disco.  ie the gauge is in the same location, and you would have to change trigger assy to Gen 1 Mrod/Challenger.  The Barracuda or Evolution stocks would look sharp.

I believe the valve is the same as the prod valve? If this is correct then I have a prod I converted to .172. I am still tuning it trying to see max power but I have seen as high as 788 fps with a 26 gr slug. Over 35 fpe. That is with aggressive porting of the valve, bore sized tp and barrel, 26” of barrel, light valve spring, heavy hammer spring. If your interested I have a disco trigger and stock I would trade for a prod trigger. Shipping might not be worth it for the stock though. I’d be curious to see what you could get just with a 24-26” barrel with opened tp and barrel though.

I thought the prod, 1720, and 1701 were all the same with the exception of the upper. Just looked it up and the 1720 and prod have the spacer between the gauge block and valve.
You reminded of a couple of builds I bookmarked, these look sweet.  Now got to rethink things

Thanks for the trade offer. I have a disco stock, trigger, and a stack of other things. I will have to look and see if any of my frames are two stage.  Right now it’s going to live in a plastic stock so I need mine.

I don’t want to give up before I start but 15fpe would work.

I believe the air tube is smaller also on the P.

The air tube on the 1701P is about 3" shorter than prod/1720T.  It has about 2/3rds the air capacity.

The barrel is 10.1" vs 12" of the 1720T/prod, too.  You could use the 1720T shroud and parts, and should be reasonably quiet with the additional 2" of space.

I don't think you need any wild porting.  Just take the valve exhaust, TP, and barrel to 0.130" - 0.140".  Probably want an O-ring buffer or SSG, to keep dwell short for the short barrel.

The Evo or Barracuda stock does look great  ...

I am all about modding but just to play Devil's advocate....
 The 1701P in original configuration is an amazing target pistol.
I get over 60 shots from a single charge before the FPE starts to fall off, and it is dead-nuts accurate.
 I know I am not... but if I were you, I would reseal it and sell it at a decent price, then use that money to build you 8 shot cannon.
That said, if you DO make a carbine, I would like to call dibbs on the original barrel if you want to sell it to help fund your build.

added the longer 1720 / P-rod lower tube
added an LDC
added a Corcoran stock
added a HuMa regulator

such is Crosman products and the aftermarket support, your only limited by your budget

I really do not understand why most people want power.

I am building a PROD from brand new take off parts I bought from a member here and I want it to be low power.

Had some parts powdercoated in metallic and they came out great 

No rush to finish it though  ..

You are thinking like me till I add the cost.
So what I am thinking is reseal with a larger TP and longer barrel and I am out $75. 
If I go custom. I got a Cothran discovery valve .180, a couple of hammers and triggers and misc springs. So I would need a air tube $100, barrel $200 and breech $150. Don’t like the disco breech. Love the 1720 and 1701 breech. So $450 for custom.
If I sell the 1701 for let’s say $250 then got another $200 to make up the difference. Or keep it and do the $75.  Been approved for a shoebox so not pushing my approved budget.
So this will be a 20 to 55yrd gun. So fpe is really for flat shooting and wind bucking. This will be my garden protection gun.

 Do what ever you want, you could dump that much in a 2240 and a steel breech ONLY. That 1701P trigger group is amazing and the breech is to die for.

I have the beginnings of my next build and the 1701P barrel/ brake / front sight on a 2240 would make me another sweet 1740.

I just had a 1720 barrel delivered.  Was $85 to the door. Don't know what the air tube would cost. But i bet it wouldn't be much over $25. I don't see 15-16 fpe being hard to hit with a little porting. With 18 probably doable.

I would go with the air tube over the barrel. 2" of barrel is not going to buy any real noticeable power gain.  The most likely area you will come up short, is not having enough air supply.   It would probably look better configured as a carbine.
