Yeah. It's not as good as some of his later work but it was pretty good.

Great movie.  But anytime I see a scene from that movie, I can't help thinking how most of those little villages were wiped from the face of the earth and most of the descendants were eliminated by the Nazis in WW2 or by the actions of the communist party in their own country.

Knowing what I know now… if I was a young man during WW2 I would have done whatever I could to avoid the draft. I would have bought real estate on the outskirts of a major city, developed it, sold it for a profit to the returning GIs trying to start a family. Then taken my moneybags and sailed off into the sunset.
