Thanks, Tom.  I made another set from maple.  After staining and one coat of BLO I decided to use them as test pieces, as I didn't like how the stain came out.

So both were engraved by my laser - "408" on one side and "K" on the other.  (Engraving is done as a raster-type cut instead of a vector.  This burns out material to give depth and width to the image.)

A few days later I was playing with some ideas, and decided to give a quick shot at what checkering might look like.  I just did a quick trapezoid on each with 18LPI (actually 0.055" interval) vectors.  If I felt like putting more time in, I could have rounded sides and corners to fit the shape of the grip.  Anyway, you can see the finished product.  What I learned from this is that next time I will do both the engraving and checkering at the same time (alignment was a BEAR, as you can reckon from the left side). 

Because of the fine cut of the laser I ended up with the old-fashioned flat-top checkering.  In a couple weeks I'll go to my brother's house and we'll give it a shot using his CNC 3D router with 60^o and 90^o degree tips.

My latest revision to the grips is a right-handed version in cherry.

The thumb rest certainly helps with the feel, and these are also another 1/8" thicker (combined) and better fit my hand that way as well.

I'm thinking about making one more set, this time extending the rear a bit so that my trigger finger isn't in a weird place.

This is definitely a "sleeper" as far as pellet guns go for accuracy, speed, and adaptability.

I just got a note from Daisy CS telling me that the 408 has been discontinued. I've had two on order at PA since August and they didn't know this info as of Monday.  Dang.

Anybody with a 408 or two in decent shape wanting to offload it, PM me.  I'll also consider parts guns, if that's what you have.
