Your Bulldog slug results

Shot a Hi Kal 153grain hp into 4 milk container lined up at 23yards. The slug almost blew up the first 1 gallon jug. The slug went through the first 2 and made a impression on the back side of the 3rd but did not make a hole, the slug was in the 3rd jug. No idea what the velocity was 2800psi on gauge. The 142 NSA went 762 fps so Hi Kal had to be a little slower. It measured. 64 at the widest point. The POI was similar to NSA @the 23 yards the jugs sat at. I'm impressed with the expansion at that velocity. Now I need to see if they group well.

Don't be surprised if the Bob Sterne/Hi-kal slug is the same speed or even a little bit faster than the NSA 142 though it is heavier due to it having less surface bore riding friction.  It certainly expands and dumps energy well.

I wouldn't use that heavy around unless the gun was tuned for 200+ fpe.

My Bulldog came back from Jefferson State air guns shooting 250 FPE. It has a mega moderator Barrel supports depinger and the competition trigger. After installing the trigger I lost 100 FPS. It was shooting accurately so I left it.

My priority is accuracy and is the round going to do its job.

Been looking at the Hi Kal ammo. People reported the bulldog was accurate with these rounds.

How do you like the gun? Im about to ditch my Texan SS and purchase a “mega pitbull”


Anyone have a slug they suggest for coyotes? Shots are 50 yards.

I have taken yotes out to 70 yards with these in .358 size. Full passthrough.

i have always had great luck with nick's 105gr hp-fb slugs on deer, hogs and other critters as they come around.....yep, a kiyot now and then

Why are you ditching the Texan? Too long? That's my chief complaint.

Wasn't a fan right away. But it grew on me. Accurate out to 50 yards. Haven't shot past that with it.

I can see the small bore working well with this configuration.

The 130gr hollow point from GT Bullets is fairly economical and seems to be doing well out of a Bulldog in the 240-280fpe range.  I buy them at .358 and the Bulldog likes them sized at .356. 

This target was shot at 75 yards.  The top right and center bull were sighters.  Then 5 shot groups were put on the top left, lower left, and lower right bulls, topping off between magazines.   These were shot untethered, standing next to my truck with the Bulldog rested on a single bag.

More BD slug results with GT Bullets 130 and 88gr HP's. 

Here is a target shot with GT Bullets 130gr and GT bullets 88gr.   Both sized .356.  The upper right and lower right bulls are 5 shots of 130gr running from roughly 1000fps down to 900fps.

Distance is 75 yards.



The center, upper left, and lower left are the 88gr running 1080 down to the 975 range.  Again, distance is 75 yards.  notice they didn't like running at that speed.  I believe this is due to the BD's fast rate of twist. 

So, to really see what the 88gr HP's would do, I tethered and regulated at 2000psi.  this yields right at 900-910fps out of this particular BD.  It is a very docile shot cycle.  Accuracy was surprising to say the least.  Yes, the center bull is 5 shots.  That is the best group either of my BD's has very produced.  Never would have expected the fast rate of twist to shoot such short bullets so well. 



I've been wanting to see how well the 88gr expand.  I set up 3 water jugs at about 65 yards.  Tethered at 2000psi, 900fps muzzle velocity.   1 shot passed through one jug and remained in the second.  I was worried this wouldn't happen and I didn't have any more jugs to shoot.  Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good....

I do not have a bulldog yet but I am looking.  I decided to add a comment about bullet testing.

I tested bullets for my 30 06 and my son's 7mm 08.  There used to be a gun writer that liked testing in wet newsprint and I took the paper at the time so it was cheap and pretty easy to do.  All I did was loosely tie up stacks of papers, soak them at least overnight, and put them in a wood box sized to the papers and about 2 feet deep.  I got the deepest penetration with 180 grain Nosler partitions at about 18 inches.  180 grain hornadys were about 15 inches.  I don't know what a bulldog will do but I tend to think that a 2 foot box would stop it's slugs but it might not if there is no expansion. 

I will test it in a smaller stack of phone books with my Prod soon.  I do not expect much expansion at Prod velocity but we'll see.

I can tell you that a stock Bulldog with a cast and powder coated 125gr Lee 356-125-2R will stop in about 12 inches of rubber mulch held in a 5 gallon bucket with two layers of pizza box cardboard holding it in.

I haven't tried heavier in this bucket trap yet, but I have Benjamin Nosler and two different Griffin boat tail slugs to try (115 LDC and 150gr). I'm wanting to trap everything I can for casting later. I'll also be testing Lyman 356637 cast when the mold arrives.

Do any of the larger Hi Kal.slugs fit on the magazine.  Are you all hand feeding them.  I was hoping to use the magazine.  I think the mag is .62 inch.

Also, what about Matt's  bullets.   Anyone try them.  What amount of tin did you use?

GT Bullets.  Do they make 357?  Seems 38 or 9.

You can fit .750 inch or slightly larger in the Bulldog magazine, I think I measured .770 on one of the Griffin rounds that fits.

One look at the NSA 142 gr. slug when expanded tells me all I need to know.... If you want lots of expansion, you need a deeper HP, it is expanding all the way to the back off the HP cavity, it can't expand more than that.... My 153 gr. has a huge HP by comparison, hence the much greater expansion.... Think of it this way....HP depth governs maximum expanded diameter.... HP mouth diameter affects the minimum velocity for expansion....
