I would like some information on lighter hammer springs for the .308-.357 Corsair. Has anybody made or come across a hammer spring adjuster yet? When shooting .310 round ball, I know there is a bunch of wasted air. Also any recommendations for inexpensive, accurate ammo. Want to shoot mainly between 50 and 100 yards. I only have the .308 now, but the .357 will be along shortly so I welcome information on both. Thanks, Tom

Yes I have used a lighter spring in both my .308 and .357 . Bought them at OHS . Servalite springs part number 44U 3 1/4 long 5/16 OD 47 wire . Cut to stock spring length . If you do a search here you should be able to see my chrony readings . Or go to photo bucket and do a search for melloroadman . It will say not found did you mean a user melloroadman say yes . The chrony readings are in separate folders . Marvin

I've had your chrony strings saved in my computer for quite a while. It's really tough to find this spring here, I will probably end up calling one of the OHS in CA and see if they will mail me about 4 of them. Thanks for your reply, it would have been learn to make them otherwise.

Marvin,
If you would, please take a look at
www.mcmaster.com
at spring 9662K42
Its a continuous length (36") .312 O.D. and .048 wire, 11.6 coils per inch. A pack of 5 pieces 36" long for $14.65. Shipping ought to be less than $10.
Does that look like a close enough match? It might work for Tom. That would make enough springs to keep the whole forum going.
I use McMaster all the time (my wife never sees that credit card, LOL) and am really impressed with their selection and speed. Where i live (Virginia), if I order online by 3:00 in the afternoon, 95% of the time the UPS guy has it at my house the next day.

I looked at that last night . This spring has 10 coils per inch . So it might bind on you . Later to day I will look in a century catalog for you . Here is their on line site Marvin

Tom,
You'll certainly have a nice assortment to try.
While you are waiting for them to arrive, You can use this calculator to predict the spring force. One thing you need to do first is measure the cocked length of the stock spring, and the uncocked length. You will also need to know the free length, dia, etc.
Run the numbers to find the force for the stock spring at both the cocked length and the uncocked length. Then plug in the numbers for some of the new springs and see how they compare. That will give you a good idea of where to start.
http://www.msdspring.com/SpringCalculator%5CDefault.asp
Marvin mentioned it earlier.... check to see how close to coil bind you are in the cocked position.

Thank you for the spring calculator link, I added it to my formulas bookmarks. Still pondering on a hammer spring adjuster, would really be handy to change springs through the end plug!! Thanks again for your help guys, Tom

Yes, saves a lot of measuring, cock gun and screw in adjuster til coil bind. Back off a little and you have all the spring can give you.

I tried all five springs for hammer spring replacement, all too soft. Should be fine for Discos, Marauders, etc. I may try the weakest one for a heavier valve stem spring. The first day I had it, I fouled up the cone style air valve stem. I expected to find air in it, and fired it with no air and knocked the valve stem into the air tube. That fouled up the cone spring and when I put it back together again, I got two good shots with lots of extra air. On the last shot the cone spring got between the stem and the seat and nicked the seal edge of the valve stem. I used a drill and a file to take out the nicks and ordered two more valve stems. Randy sent me a new valve stem retainer assembly that they came up with. It is a basket that screws into the air tube and acts as a retainer for a regular compression spring. I'll post a pic next time I take it apart. Much better looking set up than the cone spring. That got it shooting again, but I couldn't get chrony readings, the air blast wouldn't let the chrony work, I cut off about two coils of the stock hammer spring and got this. 3800 psi fill, 45gr round ball, 757, 771, 810, 846, 884, 921, 1000, 1058, 1075, 1067, 1048, 1001, 924, 735. When I find the fill pressure that starts at 921, I will be satisfied. That's 85fpe to 115fpe and back. Later, Tom

You bet, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, Coastal Farm, about 5 or 6. I will keep my eyes peeled as I drive around and hit any stores I missed. Also went out to the shop last night and filled to 3300 and got 924 fps. Anytime I shoot a 7something shot, it self empties all the air in the tube, probably because the stem seal doesn't have sharp corners? I put all my gun stuff away today as I have to finish the gun vault that I have almost finished. Does anybody have an opinion on sizing .310 round ball downward a bit? I have to push pretty hard to get them in and am afraid I will have bolt handle problems if I keep it up, It's already loosened up twice. See ya, Tom

It has nothing to do with the seal . It is a normal occurrence in PCP . It is called a tank dump . Not enough tank pressure to close the valve and a syphoning effect takes place . Can not really re size RB . Look for a light weight 32 acp bullet or a .312 and re size that . Marvin

If you are casting the RB yourself . Spray the mold with drop out mold release . That should help some .Marvin
