Who will make a WAR Flex barrel?

Now that Jim has shut down WAR, who will make a Flex barrel?  I want to have a 24" .30 slug barrel and shroud machined.  I've posted wanted ads on a couple of boards but never had any bites.

Although they are extremely busy right now with the Raptors, Travis of JSAR was part of the team that designed and manufactured the Warp. and Flex.


I would give JSAR a call and see if you can schedule it to be done.


I do not have a lathe in my shop, or I would do it for you. Only a mill for barrel work here.


Drop down to the machinist section here on the GTA and ask. Many there that can do it as well.

Yes too date have made up no less than 5 barrels now for my WarP being a .20, 2- .22, 2- 25's.
Of the 5, four had internal breech o-rings grooves and the last one my slug shooting .22 I made to have the o-ring on the breech probe.  While that does work it required a really tricky fit and transfer port shape bevel because in seating the slug the o-ring on probe passes into the transfer port hole and then must be drawn back when action is put in battery with bolt handle down & locked.
I don't think .30's even have the remaining wall thickness for an internal o-ring, but not sure being I've NEVER handled or worked with a WAR in .30 caliber

They do have an oring in the breech end for .30. He has a .30 barrel so I guess he could probably send it in to you to get an idea

There's where I'm not knowing .... In my WarP breech the threw hole is .500" which if the same for a .30 cal only leaves you with a .100" wall thickness.  The transfer port o-ring grooves are @ .055" deep which only leaves a root of .045" and actually less being a .30 cal rifling groove is larger than .300".  Same thing again when cutting in an internal o-ring groove.

This makes the work super critical on TIR ( total indicated run out ) because the remaining material is so thin wall in all these cuts required.  * Now if the .30 cal breech threw hole is larger than .500" that would make life a whole lot easier or at least not so critical in said parameters.

This is a problem of the physical properties of the barrel steel, and the receiver...you can find barrel steel from ≈45 KPSI to over 150 KPSI and I'm guessing you can also overbore the receiver barrel receptacle slightly...You just have to find a machinist with the proper knowledge and tools AND the barrel and put "him" to work.

The working pressure of the gun is what 3-5000 psi?   I have NO idea what the WP is for that gun.

Calculate the area of the o'ring groove as pressure is equal over all the area and use that to calculate the ACTUAL PRESSURE on the surface of the o'ring groove using the working pressure which then determines HOW much actual psi is acting on that groove thickness then determine a SAFE additional  thickness to make the barrel OD and bore out the receivers barrel receptacle.

Basically, it's just physics and calculations that can be found on Wiki.

I'm guessing Bob or some of the other well informed developers can give you a heads-up on where/who can do the work...even though I use those formulas to build my PG rifles I DON'T share that info...WAY to dangerous as I wouldn't want ANYONE to get hurt by miscalculating or misinterpreting.

CNC equipment will handle that fine TIR and a manual if the operator knows a thing or three.

I have a similar problem futzing with my Herc barrels, OEM and TJ...I have one internal barrel o'ring and TWO external o'rings to cut and those o'rings leaves ≈0.050" - 0.055" at THREE places with the WP at 250 BAR, ≈3600 psi give or take with the barrels...I'm doing OK with my well used manual lathe being VERY careful and knowing MY and the lathes limitations.  This is a .357 cal, and the barrels are 0.584 OD at the receptacle and the chamber was 0.364" at those points...the o'ring depth is 0.484"...0.120"/2 = ≈0.60" walls.

You might also think about the fact that it's ONLY TWO, 0.060" thick RUBBER o'rings containing that pressure in the receiver and ONE containing the pressure in around the probe in the actual chamber.  Part of the answer is the system ISN'T CLOSE...it is open at the muzzle end so the pressure is basically instantaneous(or almost) in the chamber and drops quickly.

ANY machine shop can do the work...for a price...and there are many barrel makers available.

Scott, I have done a few 1/2" OD barrels in .30 cal, using the TJ's 26" twist liner.... and there is plenty of wall thickness for a # 011 standard O-ring.... Now, if you move up to .35 cal, with a 1/2" OD.... you have to drop down to a 1mm CS Metric O-ring (9mm x 1mm x 11mm)….

I could easily send the oem 17" barrel as a template, or perhaps even the complete upper.  To me the Flex is such a large platform that the 17" barrel is a waste.  for my uses it's already a supported-shooting-only gun, adding another 7 inches of overall length is nothing but a positive.  It would be awesome to turn it into a 150, maybe 200 fpe bullet shooter.  I have both unregulated and cobra regulated blocks, WAR, WAR Cobra, and Powerhouse valves for it. 

Later this evening I'll shoot Scott a PM.

I under stand completely Scott. My issue is that I would have liked the have used the longer shroud here, but not as long as it is. I can't thread ti ture.


I have no issue what so ever squaring the shroud though. I can due two different methods. One, measure and cut on the mill, or draw file.


I know what your thinking. File? How can that be true. Well, I learned the techniques used by the gunmakers  of Purdy and Holland and Holland long ago. If they can fit the action of the finest double rifles and shotguns in the world, I can after 45 years of experience, fitt a simple ag shroud. LOL!!!

Knife---I've seen some old school machinists using squares and files to demonstrate their skills.  In the right hands and given the right amount of time no doubt straight and square can be achieved.  But as you pointed out, those were not exactly entry level economy guns being produced, lol.

Now that we've found the who, now I need help figuring out the "what."  a .30, 24" long but which one??

There is a constraint with the Flex that can be worked around but I do not want to invest in this particular area----the transfer port is limited to .25"  Going larger would require significant breech modifications that are not in scope. 

There's the first constraint, a .25" transfer port.

I prefer a 24" barrel .30 capable of shooting off the shelf slugs from NSA as I don't plan to go down the casting road any time soon.  It would be really nice to have the ability to shoot slugs and JSB pellets, but if that is not possible then slugs only is fine. 

So the second constraint, but I can be flexible here, is slugs and pellets.

What are some reasonable expectations with these constraints?  I assume TJ's barrel is the way to go, which one??

Roy did a 30 cal TJ 1:26 twist barrel for me earlier this year and it shoots pellets lights out but I still haven't found a slug for it yet. One of the constraints I have is the barrel is only 17 inches and the TP is .187. I'm still shooting pellets around 830-840fps even with the shorter barrel. I don't think the .250 TP will be much of an issue specially if you go with a longer barrel.

Thanks for sharing this info.  I can add that my OEM 17" barrel, which I believe is a TJ's, shoots the NSA 55gr pretty decent once you crank up the power.  But the short barrel burns a ton of air when pushing 925fps....Even with a 500cc tank shot count was very low.

Very true, it burns up the air at even the lower velocity I'm shooting at. 28 shots at 830-840 fps 68fpe-ish. I'm hoping Nick makes some lighter slugs in 30. Somewhere between 42-45gr would be nice to try out. That way I could still be shooting them close to the same velocity as pellets but hopefully get much better long distance results.

I would try the 1:26 TJ again. NSA got some new slugs coming out on the machine that should work great in them.
