I've always wanted an airshotgun since before they made modern air shotguns. When i was 7 or 8 and my dad had given me my daisy 99 i ask if it would shoot like a shotgun if you filled the barrel with bb's. I was hoping even then. When i saw the first farco CO2 air shotguns i wanted one but there was no viable importer then, Sharks AG's were hard to find and i didn't have the money for one anyways. So i filed the air shotgun away as a future possibility and just now am going to be able to try a hunt with an air shotty.

As my garden grew up over the last few months i've noticed the doves coming in for their daily gravel feast and as the dirt was turned over their numbers have grown till i have a good 20+ dropping in and pecking up all the corn dropped and feasting on wild seeds as they are cut down. Dove season starts in a month and i know the last of the corn will be cut during the next few weeks leaving a 120 foot by 50 foot open swath, the birds will be dropping in in squadrons, the shooting will be done at very close ranges of 20 yards absolute max.

I'll be trying my fire 201 as it was used as an airshotgun however my hangup will be the unchoked rifled barrel which may well sling pellets everywhere. I'm picking up some punches at harbor freight tomorrow and will try to use the hollow 3/8" punch to make wad bases and barrel seals. Ideally i'd like a self inserting cartrigde that will contain the shot for a short period so as to limit the centrifudge action the rifling may cause. If i hadn't of been so cheap i'd have bought the 201 shotgun barrel i saw come up for sale on the yellow a few months ago.

So anyways wish me luck over the next few weeks as i try to come up with a wad/shot cup that allows for enough #8 or 9 shot so as to make this a viable hunter. Any thoughts as to design feel free to mention.. J

I know federal law dictates that shotguns be used only. My using air propelled shot is possibly walking the gray line but i'm not going to worry about it. J

I don't think it is a grey area at all. If it propels shot it is a shot gun. I know some of the guys on here take them with pellet guns and i think it is legal where they are. I was just wondering if it was legal where you are. Sounds like you rules resemble ours though.

There is a way to make a custom air shotty. I have been thinking about this since i saw it for sale...

Could you imagine building a maxxed out Crosman HPA pistol with this top-end on it.. I bet that would be a real blast (pun intended) I borrowed this from http://www.crookedbarn.com/ I bet you could even have a longer smooth bore .380 barrel machined pretty easily to fit this to a discovery... imagine the fun and possibilities lol.

I felt the gray line wasnt to gray either, i figure any game warden who saw my setup would realize i was seriously handicapped by my equipment and not worth the paperwork..

Any reason that crooked barn shotgun breech would'nt bolt right onto a disco, the only machining would be a longer barrel or the barrel clamps right?

The position of that tiny screw under the bolt is the only thing I can think of.... The one on the Disco is further back than the one on the 22XX tubes.... The forward hole is drilled in the Disco tube but it's a bit large to reliably tap to 4-48.... might work, might not....

If you do use the forward screw hole, then you will have to grind a notch on the top of the Disco valve at the back to miss the screw where it sticks through the tube....

Seems like it would be something you'd be interested in building bob, as you could make it any power level(under 500) you wanted just by adding more lead. Would be a grouse harvesting machine!!

Im thinking that would fit nicely on a 2260 with the shorter tube. My HPA 2260 thinks it needs one of those.

Your right, a 2260 would be a good platform. HPA is the only way to go as well, cO2 and this would just be a sparrow gun at best i'd think. Maybe i'm wrong. idk.

I do wish this was some other breech than crooked barns, i've used their breeches before on a build and found that they are never smooth and gall unless you finish them out. It's almost like you get an unfinished breech. Could be though that as these shotty conversions are a bit less production, that more care is applied to them. The other thing is the system of securing the barrel is just an allen screw deal that seemed a bit flimsy to me, even more so if coupled by an aluminum barrel. Who cares though, gotta have it.

They are left hand bolt only for pistols i see..

I think you would be better off saving the $125 and testing your 201.
The rifling in your 201 isn't going to pattern well, but you could get an idea of what it could to.

If you could use that money to buy a smoothbore barrel then I think you would be a little happier since your 201 would have more power.

Tissue paper might work for making your wad and using something like a playing card to build rolled up to build it.
If you cut the card and use scotch tape to make a shell to build the wad, then you could cut a foam ear plug and use it for both ends to keep the shot in.

link for using shot in a fire 201 - the rifling is going to spread the shot. If you had a smoothbore barrel you would get a better pattern.

Some people also cut brown paper lunch sacks into usable sizes to build their shots out of.

Wrap the bag around a wooded dowel or something the size of your bore. You could also use the playing card as I said above to the size of the bore and use the card to help hold your wads you are building.

Once the wad casing is made tape or glue the ends.

The advantage of using something stiff like a card or a piece of plastic as the shot shell is that it makes it easier to carry. Too thick and you make the column of shot a smaller diameter. If you could use something stiff to keep the shot safe and then push the wad out to load then that would probably work better.

If a bigbore making ever makes a air shotgun I hope they make it where a brass shotgun shell with a air flow hole in the back is used. It could easily be make out of delrin, but just being able to remove the shell and replacing it after each shot would be so much nicer.

I keep asking myself why a gun powder .410 patterns so poor and if it would carry over to a air powered gun.
That's why I think something in at least 28 gauge(.050) would be better for an air shot gun.

If you were to mount one of those kits to a disco, you would want to use the new location for the breech screw. just make sure you have the newer notched hammer (which may come standard in a discovery also). I'm not sure which location the crooked barn shot breech has, but any way you do it, its not hard to drill and tap the 4/48 screw if you need to. I've done it to a 13xx gun. not really much of a big deal, if you are handy with tools. Which breech screw location does come standard on a disco anyway? On a 2240, both threadded hole are already there, so you can use either breech screw location, may be the same on a disco... I dont own one though so I dont know for sure. I've been thinking about making a large pistol or carbine shotgun on HPA ever since i saw this for sale.. I dont really know what i'd use it for, but I just think it'd be a cool gun to have nonetheless...

on the doves at least. That crooked barn breech is gonna be kinda toylike in comparison i think. More of a carpenter bee hunter rather than anything bigger. Will be a neat project though. J

Hey THANKS airpuffhunter! Dove season is closing in and i have not even tested a load yet, although i've been thinking about it and did till the side field up yesterday, which brings the birds in by the drove. I'll use this design and hopefully it will simplify the learning curve. Got to put some of these together tonight, i'll let everyone know how it goes. J

A bit off topic, but as a kid I use to make shot for my sling shot. I would take a piece of toilet paper and separate the two layers. Then using the thin single ply I would put x amount of shot in the paper, twist the ends together
This worked like a charm, as soon as you released the sling, the paper would tare open and the shot would spread out. I killed countless birds with that system
