I finally got around to getting a new spring and seal for the 34 from fox sporting goods. The springs and seals are made by vortek.

The new spring is shorter but more stout and right now it is giving me between 845-850 consistent with cphp's and that is straight after installation.

It shoots excellent. Although the old spring looked like spaghetti, the seal was still good to my untrained eye, I replaced it anyway.

New spring, new seal, new RWS 4-12x50 scope should equal some more dead hosp's.Rob

Sounds like you got it running

but I would think that you should be getting more fps. My tuned.177 RWS34 Panther is pushing the 8.6 FTS @ 870fps and the 7.9 CHP's are close to 900fps. Before the tune the shooter was getting tired but still pushing lead at 840fps. Ed

Is there any way that the shorter spring is causing the low fps, before the tune and before the spring was tired she was pushing 921 fps then fell to 870 fps.

There is a considerable size difference between the two springs.Rob

You may have to let the seal break in. My M34P shot slower to start then picked up after about 2 hundred shots. Also I had used too much grease and it was messing up the velocity, once I cleaned it out it jumped up to a respectable speed. Also did you leave one washer in the piston? If not you may to go back in and put one in there.

DmikeM, there were no washers in the piston to begin with. This shooter does not have an RWS logo on it just Diana and it was made in 06, also the piston has 3 holes in the back of the piston going from seal to bottom of piston I think maybe for weight reduction.

Also the Diana seal (blue) is a much softer material than the vortex seal (red) which is very hard in comparison. Perhaps it will break in as you said. For lubes I used moly on the seal and piston top and bottom, clear tar on the guide and not much of either.

She sure does shoot sweet though.Rob

You didn't get lube on the top of the piston seal did you? You can get a washer from the hardware store that will fit if you think it needs the extra weight.

At first it was shooting 845-850 with cphp, then I chronyed it last night and it was at 812.
So I added a heavy washer in the piston and it brought it up to 860-870 but now has twang.

I don't think I like vortex seals and am getting ready to re-install the old Diana seal which looked still good to me.

All I want is the power back that it did before.

How long do seals take to break in, I don't shoot 500 pellets in a day let alone a week, probably more like a month so how many months is this shooter going to be weak.

How tight does the Vortek seal feel in comparison to the factory seal? Could be the Vortek is tighter and you're loosing some fps from drag. depending on how tight the seal is, will determine how long it takes for the seal to "wear" in. A shorter spring doesn't automatically mean lower fps. Try reinstalling the factory seal w/o any spacers using the new spring. Chrony it. Then try it with the spacers and factory seal. Chrony it. See which has the better firing behaviour and velocity. You may find that extra piston weight gives more power, but may make the rifles firing behaviour more unpleasant.

The diana seal was tighter than the vortex seal.

Some one else hear on the forum had mentioned this aswell, hopefully the seal expands.Rob

I put it in the piston, in front of the spring.

I tried the other way before and the rifle will not cock.

Am in the process of dismantling again, will update.Rob

I decided to leave the vortex seal in for a bit and see what happens.. we'll call it an experiment.

After opening it up I seen some moly on the face of the piston, so I wiped everything down and gave it all a much less coating.

H&N Ftt at 8.66 give me 821fps and cphp are doing 858 fps for kicks I tried h&n barracuda powers at 10.16 gr and they did a dismal 599 for 2 shots.

Both seals are fairly tight with the diana seal being tightest.If I put my finger over the transfer port, hold the Ag upside down then remove my finger the piston does not move with either seal. Thanks for all the help guys.

I have changed the spring and seal in my 34 .22 also.
I used the vortek spring and seal again, I chamffered the breach before so it could shoot the rws pellets but it doesn't like them and as a result I have lost a little speed because I made it too big.
Right now I am getting just under 15 fpe with the preds but she is stupid accurate.
I am pleased with the results and when money gets better I will spend the 300.00 dollars to actually vortek all my rws rifles.
So far the 34 .177 + .22 have vortek springs and seals and the 350 .177 has a maccari pro mag spring and vortek seal.
They all shoot wicked with a solid thump and are crazy accurate, and the stoeger has the tarantula spring and gamo seal from maccari along with a grt111 trigger and I am just waiting for my barrel to be crowned from the gun shop.

After some shooting I passed her over the chrony with 7.9 gr cphp@ 811fps and she is putting out just under 12 fpe.
This must be a 12 fpe spring as that would explain the .22 getting just shy 15 fpe.

But she is smooth and shoots nicely.
