AVS Slugs verses 25 cal GM Marauder Barrel

I ran some groups of three different type AVS slugs in .25 cal through my Marauder today at 50 yards.  I don't know what speed these lighter slugs were traveling at, but do know the gun is tuned to sling the 41gr BBTs at 830 FPS, so they're probably traveling in the mid 900s.  I think these may have been traveling a little too fast for best accuracy out of this barrel?

The barrel was cleaned between the first and second AVS images.

Here are the 50 yard results.  I also shot some 34gr MKIIs and some BBT groups (which never have done well) for comparison.







Just as a side note, these turkeys didn't seem to mind all the shooting one bit.  I one point the mature hen crossed my crosshairs down at the target while looking through the scope, which I had to wait on, lol.

My gm barrel in the armada likes most slugs at .249, and knurl them, though I know each barrel can be a bit different.

Nice! Those 32gr HP/HB AVS slugs look to be quite consistent. They show the most promise

Thanks!  That was my thinking on the 32gr.  I would like them to be about 38 to 40gr, which should do better.  I never changed the scope just to see the differences in POI.

A little disappointed overall though.  I remember my .25 doing much better, and am thinking something is up with it.  I'm pretty sure the speed is too high for all but the BBTs based on past testing.  Something to tinker with after this heat breaks.  It sure was a scorcher today shooting these groups, which may have had an influence, too.

 Keith I think you may have a bad barrel or TP issue. I’ve shot many GM barrel guns and even with the choke cut off I get better groups with the 34 Jsb. Push some pellets threw and inspect under a glass

Yea, somethings amiss Travis.  I checked my records from past groups at 50 and they are much better.  I have a custom aluminum TP from you which should be good, and am currently running the old prototype cobra valve which is the only thing I have left that works with that TP and custom breech.  the SS valve didn't hold up.  I'll have to check it out and see what I can find.

You can see in this link some groups I posted recently.  If you look at the MKII groups you can see they are half the size of these current MKII groups with the same barrel.  No, it never has shot as well as my .22 with the TJ barrel, but close to it.

The only thing I did differently shooting these groups is that I used a gun vise instead of bags.  Maybe that messed with the harmonics?

Try bags. I've too noticed I can shoot better groups on higher powered guns with a bipod and towel than a gun vise. Doesn't have enough give for the recoil I think and throws it off.

I'll give that a try once I check on the tune, which I am certain is within a 2% ES.  I know it's currently shooting too fast for the MKIIs, and the MKIIs don't like going over 55 FPE out of this particular barrel.  I bet these AVS slugs will really shine tuned for them.

I have not been doing well with my .25 cal slugs in my Kral and cricket. I notice that that are not really doing all that great in your guns as well. So, I took so measurements and discovered the dies are a bit too small. Im sending my dies off to be lapped to enlarge the diameter to exactly .250 I'll be testing new .25 cal slugs as soon as I get the dies back.

That's good to read.  I did notice the AVS slugs were very loose fitting when loading.

Hey Keith, I just back for the range. I had some really great results from my 25 caliber cricket and 25 caliber kral puncher jumbo. I just received my new 25 caliber dies. this is now the third set I purchased and they are fitting perfectly.the cricket shot the slugs lights out at a hundred yards under an inch every time at 50 yards one hole. Puncher jumbo did well but it was not perfect need to find out why but the results are very promising.

I will post some video results as I get a chance to do more testing.

Thanks for the update!  It would be something to have the AVS .25 slugs shooting like your .22's do.  I'm sure it will happen.

In .25 caliber the 29.5 grain, 31.5 grain and the 33.9 grain were all good. The 26.5 grain .25 cal was not good.

Stephen sent me some revised .25 caliber slugs to try in my Synrod recently.  Thanks Stephen!  The previous slugs he sent me to test, and their results can be found in reply # 1.


Here are the results of the revised slugs at 25 and 50 yards.  I shot a group of JSB 33.95 MKIIs as a reference.  All shots are on the crosshairs with no holdover except for one AVS 34gr group at 50.  My gun is zeroed at 25 yards using the MKIIs.  I didn't take any test shots beforehand.  I picked up the gun and started shooting these targets starting left to right and top to bottom.  My gun is tuned at 56 FPE with the MKIIs.
