Dimensions of a newer HW50 stock

I'm trying to see if the action of my 1959 HW55 will fit into a newer HW50 stock. I know that both receiver OD's are 30mm. What I need to know is the center to center distance from the front trigger guard screw hole to the forward stock screw hole (see pic).

I sent my 50s (just the business end) off for tuning. Short story is that it's been missing in shipment for 5 days. If UPS cannot find it in the next week or so, I'm told they'll refund the amount for which I ensured it. If that happens, you are welcome to my stock (like new) for the cost of shipping it to you from TN.

Actually Mark, it's 7-1/8"-ish which matches my 55. I got the dim privately from someone who owns a brand new 50S.

In fact ALL the other dim's match up except that the 50 stock is 2-1/2" longer overall. That should not be a problem. Of my six HW30's, three of them have shorter stocks and the longer ones fit just fine. I know we're talking 50's and 55's here but I think it will still fit.

Different stock lengths must be an HW styling thing or something.

Mine is from 1965-66 and a 55s.  Sometime during its life, someone milled out the last approx 1-1\2 to 2" of the stock.  I have no idea why they would have done it.  I thought about making some filler pcs, gluing them in and refinishing it but my woodworking skills are not up to it.  If anyone out there has 😠 woodworking ability please let me know. I' d prefer to keep it original..

I just measured one of my 30's and yes, sorry, that is an HW30 stock.

That's terrible Sammi - I don't know what gets into peoples heads to do such a thing.

My 55 stock has been beaten to death, dropped, cracked, left in a swamp apparently. I've been trying to restore it myself. I've even had some good Stocksmiths look at pics of it and it appears it's a goner. I may still try to save it myself, but my checkering skills are non-existent, even with the correct tools. (And I'm a woodworker!!)

I was just looking again at your stock. As far as you know, is that the original buttpad?

Mine never had one and I'm trying to fit a Bisley adjustable to it. I had to make a tapered plastic shim as the rear of my stock is concave, which I have not seen on other vintage 55's.

It's not adjustable, just located where it should be if the wood was not missing.  Your stock is a "bayern" style (??) With that triple angled cheek pc while  mine is just a straight stock with no cheek on either side.  I have another 55 from 1987 however the stock feels thicker and not nearly as checkered. Shoots nice though. If love to find another stock for mine.  Your doesn't look to bad, are you just missing parts? That on might look good on my gun if you find a 50s stock from one of these fine fellows😃

With the embedded W, that butt pad is definitely Wiehrauch, and as you said, most likely original to your rifle.

Yes, mine is the Bayern style.

It was actually this stock that got me into the whole gun. I saw it on ebay and it is identical in style to my 35L Luxus. The seller on ebay was in the process of parting out the 55. He also had listed the receiver tube and barrel separately - no other parts listed yet. I contacted him about it and he said that if the currently listed parts did not sell, he would not relist it and sell me everything to complete the gun. Interestingly, the stock had a Buy It Now price, so in order to try to lock it all in, I bought the stock (wasn't cheap). Apparently no one needed the other parts - there were no bids (as I had planned with the BIN stock purchase   ), so I ended up with a complete HW55.....in parts.

My plan is to temporarily use a 50 stock just to get my gun shooting again. That will give me time to either finish the original stock myself or find someone who can. My biggest obstacle is the checkering. The wood is so old (and probably water damaged, i.e. the fibers have deteriorated) that it is very difficult to use the checkering tool on it without the fibers just crumbling away. I've been rushing it and as a result not doing a very good job. I think with a bit more patience I can get it right.

So as you see, with all the above said, I'll be keeping the original stock.

I will however still be keeping an eye out for one, so if I see something I'll let you know. In return, if you find an original buttpad, please let me know? 

Also, Nick - Does yours have the barrel latch lever on the left side of the breech?

Hi Dennis, thanks for all that. I believe I remember seeing the stack on eBay and thought about buying it but do recall it did seem pricey. Glad someone on here got it though. Yes my stock does have the barrel latch on the left side which I thought was standard.  I'll keep my eye out for a butt pad but finding parts for these are not that easy.  Good to know that a current 50s stock will work, may give me a chance to find a wood worker for mine.

Nick, trust me, if this is the same stock that you saw on ebay, you're better off having not purchased it!

If you are handy at all, you shouldn't need a woodworker to fit a new 50 stock to your 55. All it needs is a notch for the lever (they were always on the left side). That should easily be done with a Dremel tool. So many kind people have come forth (Pat, Yogi, and my private lead) that we should both easily end up with our 55's working again.

Let's see what happens with Pat and Yogi. I can do mine first, and if it turns out OK, and you don't want to do the notching on yours, I'll do it free of charge. Like I said, I'm a woodworker of over 40 years and I'm SURE I can handle that simple task! 

A bit more good news for me though!! One of my Russian ebay connections has found a 13mm Weihrauch sight for me. I now will have original Weihrauch sights on all three of my 13mm railed HW's (HW35L, 50S, 55M)!!   

This one is slightly different than my others, but it's 13mm, and original.

I'm missing sights on mine also but I put a small scope when I shoot them.  I think I could handle the cut out on the 50s, I'm looking for someone to fix the milled out part of my current stock.  It would need to be fitted with pcs that match the current stock curvature in the same wood
, glued in and shaped accordingly, stripped and refinished..skills I currently don't possess.  It's why it's been hanging on the wall waiting for a replacement or skilled wood worker to come along..I

Just from looking at your pic, I'm going to assume that yours is Walnut. European Walnut is quite a bit different than American Walnut. It's a bit softer and more blond in color. If someone added back in the missing length, two things are in play. One, it obviously has to be a butt joint. An abrupt interruption of the grain pattern. And then two, the difference in wood species. No matter how well it's done, it will be an obvious repair.

I've been emailing extensively with a gentleman named Ed Krzynowek, who was referred to me by Doug Phillips, one of the premier stock repairmen. Doug however is now retired and sent me to Ed. Over the course of those several emails with Ed, we determined that mine had just too many issues (two cracks, re-checkering) for him to reasonably go forward with working on it, especially when I came up with the suggestion of using a modern HW50 stock. I may have accidentally diss'd him, but I was sincere in trying to have him work on it. I've since sent him pics of my Diana model 38 for a refinish to try and make up a little bit but he hasn't replied.

At any rate, I'll PM you his email. You can send him pics and describe your situation and perhaps he can help you. Then again, he may just say "Whaa??....another  55 stock?"
