Polishing Spring Ends
«

I have a question concerning the mainspring for a Mendoza RM200, This will be my first tear down, so I appreciate the help.
I purchased a new OEM spring for the gun. The spring itself is straight. However, the ends are not flat. When stood on end it is obvious, from the spring leaning to one side, that they are not polished flat from the factory. My question is, should I polish the ends of the spring completely flat before installing?
Thanks in advance.

Hey FiveHole, this is what I've done to my springers. If you have the tools or have them available, I would grind the end of the spring to smooth it out completely. I use a bench grinder for the course cut, then I use a Dremel with a sanding drum to smooth it out as well as possible, then follow that with jewlers rouge on a buffing wheel. You want to make the ends as smooth as possible.
A good test is to place the end of the spring in your palm and twist it with your other hand. You do not want to feel any snags. Crude, but the way I test.
Then, get yourself a couple of stainless washers that will fit into your piston and onto your spring guide. I buff these up as smooth as possible. Add a little moly grease to all ends and assemble. It will make a BIG difference in the ease of cocking and should decrease the torque of the gun when fired.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISASSEMBLE a springer without a spring compressor
!!!
You don't have to use the specific tools I did but the end result needs to be the same. You want the smoothest ends you can get.
Happy Shooting....and modding!!!!!

Thanks ezman64. I have all the polishing equipment, that was my profession for 20+ years. Just wasn't sure if the ends needed to be completely flat. I figured that they would need to be for the smoothest operation. I'll make sure they have a nice mirror finish. That was a good explanation on how to decrease spring torque.
What thickness of stainless washers should I use use for the piston and guide ends?
The spring compressor is next on my list. Compressed springs can be very dangerous indeed. I've picked up all my parts and JM lubes. It will probably be a week or so until I can get around to taking it apart.
If anyone else has advice that may help or something specific to the RM200 I should know, all help is appreciated. I've gotten around 10K shots out of this AG and figured it would make a good test subject for me practice on!
