Crowning on a lathe versus drill press

I can't say my results are any better with a lathe than they were with a drill press...but setup sure is easier! 

Care to guess which is which?

My guess is bottom one is with the lathe.

The muzzle in the top pic (not threaded) looks flatter.... lathe

The muzzle in the bottom pic (threaded) looks like it was sanded a lot... drill

But looking at a picture is kinda iffy, rather than having the barrels in my hand.

Jeff and Steve, you guys are right.  Steve, I thought that would be the giveaway.

Both shoot great and that's what matters so to anyone looking at the crusty crown on your air rifle, get after it!

I saw the light marks on the barrel and they looked like you ran up to the barrel end.
I've done the same thing.

How does one actually do this? What tools are required aside from the lathe?

To me the one on the left has a squarer outer edge than the one on the right and the one on the right as has been stated looks like it was sanded so the outer edge is rounded off. Any pics of how you do the crown in a drill press?

BTW the same thing can be done with a handheld drill if you work out a way to support the muzzle end.  If you look at the picture in the article above, I'm supporting it on the drill press with a piece of wood that has been drilled to a slip fit with the barrel.

Hrm, I have been using the brass screw with polishing compound. Just hand held and kind of moving it around.

What improvements does a drill press / lathe make?

Oh and it would be tough to do a rifle barrel in a drill press

Have to check if I have that much travel between the base and the chuck.

I intended to express the fact that you are probably the best person I know to do a quality video in regards to the subject at hand.
The question of the definition of 'is' is not a factor.

Tom, I also use the brass screw technique for the final step.  That was true for the two in the original post as well.  I just use the drill press or the lathe for squaring the end in preparation for the brass screw.

Robert, it certainly helps if you have a floorstanding drill press but I've seen where guys have taken their benchtop drill press and laid it down, then rotated the head and base 90 degrees from each other.  That way the barrel extends beyond the base and then they set up a guide to hold the muzzle end.
