Texan SS upgrade to 4500psi

Hey guys,

I bought my Texan SS last year and actually got to hunt and take a whitetail doe with it this past gun season.  I'm having to use a 400gr slug to achieve Arkansas GFC's 400FPE requirements, which leads to slow bullets and fast drop.

I've been considering purchases a 4500 PSI valve from African Air since they day I got the gun, but haven't done so.  The deer I killed last year with it was a clean kill at what I'd consider the longest range.  Having said that, I'd like to be able to have more power.  Is it worth it to go to the bigger valve?

Question on the laws, is it require a 400gr bullet or just 400 FPE?

because a 350gr at 720 FPS gives 402 FPE...  and a somewhat flatter trajectory.
and a friends stock SS filled to 3200 gives that velocity easily (Note he was filling the aluminum tank to that but it's not recommended at all.  However, fill to 3000 in the cool morning and see that you have exceeded 3200 by a hot day afternoon anyway, so.......)

Also, my solution and the one I convinced him to go with is to buy a TalonTunes CF bottle which can be filled to 3600 and then you can use the stock valve.

I am shooting my 457 Texan filled to {only} 3500 using a 500cc CF bottle rated at 4500 (Chinese bottle so wanted a safety factor!) and have a DN modified valve but I'm not using that as an example because the different barrel lengths between a Texan and a TexanSS.

I frequently push the limits in both my airguns, racecars, etc. and yet I am leery of the AAO valve.  I have not heard of any incidents but having taken one apart and measured it I thought some of the thicknesses made me uncomfortable for use at 4500 PSI. Note that I have several custom air rifles that shoot at 4500 and I really think it is the wave of the future in PCPs so it's not that I am against that pressure but the Texan platform limits the external size of the valve so it can only be bored out so much and stay safe (unless you make it of an 'exotic' metal like titanium?).  This is one that I am not going to be the beta tester on.

Its 400FPE. 

The reason I'm looking for a lighter bullet faster is I'd like to be able to stretch out towards 100yds with it because we mostly hunt farm fields and it makes it a little hard to get in close that late in the seasone (Mid November)

Aaaaand there's always helium instead of air.  In general it gives a boost of between 25 and 30 percent but it is EXPENSIVE and I only use it for hunting, not target practice.

The problem is, how reasonable are your game wardens? Are they rule bound dumba**'s or would they listen to an explanation of what mods you are using that make your gun and ammo within the law.
I always carry a trajectory/range dope card (it's good practice for field reference anyway!) that I HAVE had to show to 'prove' what FPS (and FPE) I think I am getting... he accepted that.

The expense isn't what bothers me if its warranted, but I have NO clue where i'd get a tank filled locally.  I'd rather buy the stuff for 4500psi and a compressor TBH.

You are better off getting a carbon tank and shooting 3600 psi with stock valve. If you want even more you can remove the return spring and brass piece. Should be able to make 450 fpe easy.

4500 psi is just not practical. The only way you will get a full tank on your gun is off a compressor. If you have a fill tank you will be getting less and less every fill.

I have built my guns to run on no more then 3500 psi and most are 3000-3100 psi.

 i found a new one on ebay from a seller here in the U.S.
he had 'make an offer' tag on it, so after 2 counters.....i got it for $148 shipped and will have it thursday.
its identicle to the one you linked earlier.
checked the date and he says its 2018, so hopefully i'm in business !!

i'm getting 536fpe out of my stock texan, hope to get 550-560 @ 3600psi

Please explain how going higher pressure in the tank is going to increase the velocity. I just assumed it would just give you a higher shot count.

Same reason less pressure give you less fps.  They are not regulated so pressure controls fps.

Hmmm, I kinda thought it was self regulating buy the hammer per say. Strike of the hammer will only allow so much air to come out. A regulator would only keep all air charges consistent.

Yes the hammer does play a part. But with bigbore a lot more air is used. You raise the pressure and add some preload.
