Turning a new bolt probe for a slug gun, with o ring

As I don't have a lathe, I Wanted to try making a bolt probe on the mill. No index table avaliable here either.


I needed an o ring in the barrel, but didn't want to bother travis as he is ultra busy right now.


I make it from Bronze stock, 3/4" in dia, so there was quite a bit to turn down. LOL but it is much tougher than typical brass.


Here is what I came up with, and so far, 1000+ rounds of .25 slugs and not one hic-up, seals well and feeds thru the mag well.


Also included is the mods I made to the mag. Hard to see, but you can see the spacers, and the shield to keep bullets from backing out and locking up the mag from the bases of the bullets backing out under recoil.


I milled the inside of the rear plate of the mag, rather than the rear of the breech to give both more room for longer bullets, and and use shims that you can see on the bottom inside of the rear of the mag to allow the mag to be at full width for good fit in the breech. 


One shim was the full size of the rear plate, with the loading hole covered, as bullets would back out there onder recoil and jam the mag. Making repeat shots impossible. Only the actual thru hole is there for the bolt probe to pass thru.
As you can see with the pic blown up when clicked on, I really scarfed the shield lifting it to allow the bullets to easily pass while loading. I used a knife tip to lift it. LOL.  I will make another one and do it properly.

What happened to the bolt pics ? Nice work on the magazine , does that allow for longer bullets to be loaded ? I was looking at my air speed mags the other day , and was hoping to get it to work with my .257 Winchester . Unfortunately it’s a no go .

Had to load the pic's separately, and it is there now.


I measured the bullets I wanted to use, calculated how many 20 thou. spacers I needed, and took that amount off the inside of the mag back plate from the inside. in order to not change the fit in the breech. worked perfectly. Woo-Hoo!!!

As the rear of the breach in the RS II's allows the bolt to retract much further back than say, as Marauder. it would be an easy matter to open the breach by milling the back face fo the breach to accept quite a long Mag. without complications.

How did you lay the mill on its side to be a lathe, nice job BTY. If there's a will there's away!

I chucked up a brass, (Bronze) rod larger in dia than needed in the quill and used a carbide end mill set in the vice  and used it as the tool bit holder and traversed the cross slide table to set the depth of cut. 



Works ok for a very short piece, Not for long.


I have used an arrow nib for a steady rest on longer pieces,  and used a mill file to turn the stock. But it sure isn't idea.

You guys and your high tech gear. I used a bench drill to turn my probe, hammer is used to adjust - one tap is about 0.1mm.
