gas rams

Hi Having a bad ram to play with I decided to cut the end  off in my lathe

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!

the end cap seems to be one piece?
The threaded hole does not seem to be metric 6

The ring on the end of the shaft is not a guide or a bearing as there is clearance all around.
The shaft is threaded and the ring is screwed on probably with loctite.

The process of pressurizing these cylinders is a question in my mind.
They seem to have welded the assembly complete then put the ram in a vessel and driving nitrogen into the cylinder with excess pressure.

I think I am correct in assuming you cut the rear of the ram off  in this picture correct???


the ring on the shaft is probably a stop ring to keep the shaft from coming out the front of the ram body would be my guess..


I seem to recall looking at the front of the ram housing(where the shaft is..) there are two slots on either side of the face..... I have always thought thats how the ram would be taken down and ut together in manufacturing....

The end with the threaded hole is a solid piece.
I made a cut just at the end. The end piece is showing the inside of the ram end. It is a solid piece.
the shaft end shows no slots. The end is rolled over containing the shaft bearing and farthermost in is the shaft seal.

Crosman Gas Rams have changed over the last year. Early rams had gas injection valve in end of ram.  Then they put plastic over the hole. The newest ones I have seen look to be welded on end.

Also have seen a two piece ram as well. Did not investigate to see if it would unscrew because it was new and in good condition.

I think messing with these rams is not a good idea. For most of us tampering with them could be very dangerous.

Hi

As an air conditioning tech I am using high pressure gasses all of the time.
Since I could compress this ram easily I assumed the gas charge had leaked out, mostly.

I then clamped the ram in my lathe and restrained the end plug with the tail stock.
I then made small cuts in the ram and when gas started to escape I stopped cutting.

I would not recommend cutting a ram in good condition except as I had done with this one.
I would have thrown this one away but wanted to see how this one was assembled.

This ram can not be recharged or refurbished except by welding a plug back in with a recharge port. The seals are crimped in so they cannot be replaced.
