Crosman Domed Ultra Heavy .22. Heavy Pellet .22 (LDHP226P)

Ok, help me wrap my head around this one ..... 


I've bought Chinese pellets (for REAL cheap) and - of course - they are doodoo!
Purchased multiple Gamo pellets, and except for some specialty ones (heavy, or brass tipped) most of my guns DON'T like them very much ....
Used Crosman CPHP, Domes, (Piranha - not so good) and most shoot reasonably well.
H&N most shoot well through MY guns.
JSBs (and AA) 15.89 and 18.1 ... shoot FANTASTIC through ANY of my guns.

Now Crosman has a NEW heavy pellet (made in the US), an the CHEAPEST I found (still NOT available) is $10.99 for 200 ..... BUT, I can get IMPORTED JSB 18.1 - which I know they shoot great - for the same price for 250! ..... 
That's actually 22% cheaper/per pellet .... for local pellets COMPARED to one the industry standard IMPORTED pellet ... 


So ... is it ME? or is there something terribly wrong here?

TJ, you're 100% spot on as far as I'm concerned.  They can sell some at the high price while they're new and people are interested in trying them but they aren't going to sell well over the long term unless the price comes down well below quality pellets from JSB and H&N.  Crosman's pellets have to compete on price.  They don't compete on quality.

My Buccaneer .177 says different... Not only are the 10.3 Cpum more accurate than any other pellet so far... I can pickthem up locally and when I picked them up they were only ~5$ for 500...

The .22 Maximus I have cloverleafs 14.3 CPHP @ the same 5-6 bucks a tin...

My buccaneer .22 well it does love the JSB 15g best..    

After lead work my .25 Mrod sends the 27g Benji very close to The Kings...

lets see as an introductary price the 19g are 1 cents more each than the JSB 18g... and I have been reading about probs from tin to tin on the 18g jsb...

HMM...

also remember we have to import lead  in the U.S. now days...

so yeah to me sometimes JSB is best  and H&N are good to... But some shoot like doo doo in my rifles... Just like other brands each rifle will like what it likes...

So yeah the JSB 10.3 need to come down on price cause  they just do not compete on accuracy or availability or price..

the Crosman pellet are much cheaper usually and do not have to pay shipping...

I did finally find a rifle that tolerates the Piranhas... My .22 Buc...

Kirby, I'm genuinely happy for you that Crosman pellets are performing well.  I fondly remember the days when they did likewise for me.  Both the CPHP and CPUM in both calibers.  Most tins would produce 1/2" groups at 25 yards in most of my rifles and perhaps 1 in 4 production lots would dance around MoA.  Unfortunately that ended somewhere around late 2013 / early 2014.  I still buy some every few weeks, thinking maybe somewhere along the way I'll catch a good lot but I realize now it has been a 5 year drought.  I've even purchased the boxed (die-marked) pellets on 3 occasions and each of those produced mediocre groups as well.

Most of them just won't produce any sort of useful group at 25 yards but the ones that drive me crazy are the ones that want to group into a tight cluster but have one or two that ruin it.  Some examples:



I couldn't be sure why it was happening the first few times but it has repeated so many times now with different tins and different rifles that I know it's not the nut behind the trigger.

But even after all this, there was still some doubt in the back of my mind.  Then last fall  I was visiting my uncle and he had a tin of .22 CPHP that I'd given him years ago, marked July 2013.  He wasn't using them so I brought them home and put them against a couple of newer tins and sure enough, it was a night and day difference:

The two newer tins show the sort of thing I've come to expect...they look like they either want to stack into two distinct groups (leftmost group) or give an errant shot that would be tempting to call a flier (the second group).  But look at our old pellets from 2013, a nice MoA group.  The JSB on the right was a control group.

So I'm glad they are working well for some of you guys but I stand by my statements that they've slipped quite a distance from where they were a few years ago.  At 1/2 to 2/3 the price of JSB, that's understandable.  But if they think they can charge more than JSB, well they've lost their minds.

I'm thinking the bean counters came up with that number, after all they had to re-tool and get new dies etc. So they decided to make up that 'loss' in the first few thousand tins they sell, if they sell.

Pretty sure the price will have to come down to be competitive.

How well they (pardon the pun) stack up against JSB heavies has yet to be seen.

Looks like you can now order these on Crosman.com...  I think I'll wait to either find a lower price or hear some really good feedback...  cost plus shipping to rich for my blood at the moment.

Shipping is $16.14 for 1 $12.99 tin......

Good grief! Yea I will stick with JSB's for now.

Walmart has them now. $9.47 ea. Got mine Friday.

Here's how they stack up against the JSB 18.13 grain pellets.  The JSB's are on the left, the Crosman 19 grain pellets are on the right.  These two 5 shot strings were both shot from my .22 Mrod from a tripod rest.  The distance is 37 yards.

Actually, since WM will not carry them in my neck of the woods ..... I can order ... $ 16.39 for 200 ......   OR 18.99 for 500 JSB heavy 18.13 ....

Naaah .... I'll stick to my JSBs until Crosman wakes up ...

If you read the Walmart page I linked, it says "Sold & shipped by Walmart". Nothing was ever mentioned about them being stocked in stores. You also have to order $35.00 worth of merchandise to get free 2-day shipping too. But that shouldn't be too tough a requirement to meet. Four tins & Bob's you uncle. Oh yeah, sales tax might also be an issue.

Now, as some of you chronoed the Crosman Domed 19gr, I'd really love so see someone measuring the ballistic coefficient BC, say out to 50 yards.   

10 shots 1ft from the muzzle: Average fps minus the two extreme values
10 shots at 51y: Average fps - 2 extreme values
Record the atmospheric conditions and plug those and the fps values into ChairGun (not the app).

Thanks for the info so far and your chrono results of the Crosman Domed 19gr.
However, since I live about 3 and 1/2 thousand miles away from Crosman and their authorized sellers, I'd love to know what ballistic coefficient BC this pellet has, say out to 50 yards, before I go through the hassles of ordering it.

Matthias, I can't give a chrony reading at 51yds, but I can at 25yds. Will that help?

And to me, and many others I suppose, BC is very important as we attempt to shoot out to 100y – as the biggest factor to score first shot hits is wind, WIND, W I N D !!! 
A good BC goes a long way, pun intended.
(And of course, if we can get a slug shooting well enough, that would be nice, too..., just more expensive.)

Sorry it took me so long to get this done, but I finally had time & the weather cooperated to shoot the Crosman Ultra Heavies over the chrony.
I used my PRod for this. Here's a condensed version of what I ended up with:

Temp 90°, R.H. 67%, Zero distance from chrony 2yds, Far distance 27yds.

3.0-2.7K fill, 8 shots
Av 649.6 @ zero, Av 589.7 @ far= BC .032

2.7-2.3K
Av 710.8 @ zero, Av 645.4 @ far= BC .032

2.3-1.8K
Av 750.6 @ zero, Av 677.7 @ far= BC .031
