Now a 392 Owner

Hi all,

After a brief detour into Gamo world, I'm back to shooting a Benjamin.  This time, a 392.

I'm wondering about power.  On 5 pumps, it's really quiet.  Even on 8 pumps, there is no real "snap".

At 10 yards, the rifle struggles to penetrate a pellet tin.

Just wondering if the power is off on my rifle.

8 pumps at 10 yards on a crosman tin was able to penetrate one side (the lid) of the tin and really dent the other side.


Does anyone have any tear-down links for this rifle?  Maybe it just needs to be cleaned and lubed.

 Yeah if you have not lubed it with pell gun oil or 30 wt , do so , being new it should let your arm know you are pumping it by the 3rd pump. If not you are not getting a full seal on the pump cup.  the oil will help flush out any factory debre that may been included for free.

My Vintage S392P. Shoots 642fps & 13.1fpe. It should make your ears ring even at 4 pumps. Just took these shots...here's what it does to a heavy gauge tin can at 10yrds using CPHP 14.3gr (3,4, & 5 pumps).

Sounds like it needs a good oiling and shoot it through the system, store it with a pump or two over night and check if it held that pressure in the morning, then repeatin a few times,

If it is new... return it for exchange.

Just finished a complete tear-down and rebuild.  Well, I didn't completely disassemble the valve body.

There was a lot of gunk and paint flakes everywhere.

I checked and lubed everything.

I'll do some tin-can testing later.

I bought one back in September. Nice smooth trigger and action. Normally pump five times. Very accurate.  Don't speculate about how powerful yours is or isnt, OP, until you run it over a chronograph!  If it makes you smile when you shoot it, like mine does, it's all good!

I can state 5 pumps in a 392 with a Gamo Redfire pellet will just about tear half the skull off a squirrel at 14 yards.  At 35 yards, a domed pellet will pass through any part of the squirrel on 8 pumps.  A pointed pellet will pass through lengthwise at the same distance on 8 pumps.

And at 5 pumps it will get your attention with the discharge.  For that matter 3 pumps is louder than my 2400KT sans silencer.

Any 392 that cannot penetrate all the way through a tin can on 5 pumps is either in dire need of resealing or is defective.

now the trick is ensuring all the paint overspray in the muzzle is cleaned prior to starting testing to find the right pellet.  I will add that these brass beauties seem to have a thing for Gamo Redfires and Predator Polymags.

I think it's shooting much better since cleaning.  Still no tin can chrony results, but 10 yards with iron sights is crazy accurate.

1.  Barrel over spray was cleaned with qtips/acetone.

2. Trigger group rebuilt/stoned/lubed.

3.  Complete tear-down and cleaning.


After #3, pumping is much easier.  There were a ton of paint flakes inside the pump tube.  I want to rebuild the valve body at some point.  Anyone have links for advice there?

Lots of smiles per pump with this rifle.  Sore arms too.

To add to what anti-squirrel says about pellet choices, my original best pellet were the Gamo Rockets...the ones with the little BB in the cavity...but then I discovered JSB Exact Heavy Jumbo 18.13 grains!  Definitely likes to eat those, but I haven't tried the H&N FTT's 14 grains yet...my other .22's love those better than the JSB's!

I just rebuilt my brothers 392....I went with a new valve and cup....gun shoots like new....good luck

Tin can chrony results: 8 pumps @ 10 yards penetrates 2.5 tin cans.


I do know i can do 10 punps consistent and it seems to dump all the air.  Still, I'm happy with 5 pumps at close range for now.

Yes, you just twist it and it comes apart, makes it really easy to get in there.
