Crosman 140 Steel Valve

We're almost done remodeling my son's house so I finally have some time to work on some of my own projects. First up are a pair of Crosman 140's that I picked up at a show last fall. I have all of the o-rings and FT piston caps are on the way from Mac1.
I disassembled the older of the two and found that the rear half of the valve is actually steel. I have only seen brass or aluminum mentioned for 140 valves. Is this a known factory variation or possibly custom machined? There are marks on the aluminum front half of the valve so it's definitely been worked on before.

"the aluminum front half of the valve "
That tells that your right and it has been worked on
something that old should have brass
But, what do I know.
Just thinking with my fingers

The older one is a 3rd variant. Aluminum front, steel rear.
I noticed that JG Airguns has the rear half listed as possibly brass, aluminum or steel.
Waiting on felt oil wipers to arrive later today before installing the Mac1 piston head.
Newer one is a 4th variant. Aluminum front, brass rear.
This one is back together and working great. The original pump cup was in good shape so that saved a little work.
For less than $20 I have enough orings to reseal fifty of these rifles. It would have cost less but I ordered in both 70 and 90 duro. Transfer port seals are cut from poly tube with one end shaved to a taper to fit in the barrel recess.
The barrel crown on both looked pretty bad but the 4th Variant was horrendous. A quick session with a Manson crown tool cured the problem.
