Talk to me about a 2040
« on: January 06, 2019, 04:48:10 PM »
I am a Modder at heart. ::)
I've had a 2240 that progressed to a 1740 and a CCS 2300. Morphed between both pistol and Carbine. More sighting options than you can shake a stick at.
I am really impressed with the .20 cal. 'Dans I own. Both C pumpers and an F that is CO2.
The new offering from JSB in .20 made a believer out of me that this caliber is not going away any time soon.
We should all know the stock 2240 is plenty strong for a pistol and there are tons of upgrade (rabbit hole is deep).
 I have done a search for 2040 with limited hits (2) on a .20 cal 2240, 2400, 2500 builds.
I see Mellon air has a LW .20 barrel suited for it, but at $160 for the barrel alone, that is a show stopper.
Surely there has to be an easier way.
I saw the Crosman SSP was available with a .20 liner, but those are scarce as hens teeth.
Thinking an old Streak with barrel separation maybe a good donor?

Any help , recommendations or advice is appreciated.

Here is mine after installing barrel, bolt, and Prod shroud. I did some trigger work to smooth things out. Put a Gamo red dot on to see how things were going to go.

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/MGalleryItem.php?id=6170

Same gun with the Hipac installed. Poly TP added. Was getting about 18 shots on CO2 and around 9ish good ones on 1200psi HPA.

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/MGalleryItem.php?id=6171

As it looks now, with 2 Prod barrel bands, a smaller Daisy red dot, a Magpul foregrip, blue fork trigger, Hogue AR15 pistol grip, and 4 oring stack BSB. I'm not at home, so I can't give any numbers, but 6 orings brought it down to around 350ish. ;)

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/MGalleryItem.php?id=6172

Wyoman would probably have the best advise about converting to a .20.

I don't know what's going on with my computer, but it won't preview with pictures. I guess I'm gonna have to bite that bullet....  :-\

BTW, GO CLEMSON!

You can .20 blanks directly from LW for $112. Not exactly cheap, just mentioning it because you mentioned another for $160.

And did you mean Mountain Air instead of Mellon? I didn't see any .20's on Mellon's site.

Hey Daddy,

When i bought my SSP new all those years ago I only got a .177 barrel with mine.  I don't think I knew what was available then but I sure wish I had blindly bumbled into the triple caliber set which was available.

At any rate i have been thinking of getting a .22 barrel but a .20 might be really awesome on this gun.  So you have got my attention.

If worse comes to worse maybe we could split a blank,  I only need 12" +/-.

A few years ago  I bought a .20 L/W barrel from Alex (http://airgunartisans.com/AApneumaticforays.htm) at that time he had several they were about 18" and the best part was they were 7/16" O D. Back then he was getting $75.00 for them. You would still need to cut to length and add the T/P. As for a bolt, usually you can get by with a .177 and add a slightly larger o ring.

I've considered the Weirauch barrels too, but it is a high cost of entry.  Still... a 2040 :)

You're going there...

Oh yes I am!

I found a NOS Lothar .20 barrel on ebay. 16.25" long,  .437 (7/16)" OD, recessed crown, with a Crosman T.P. drilled ....for $68!
Clicked "BUY IT NOW". Should be here Monday.

 So now the Game begins.
Being 16" long and both ends already worked, I don't want to cut it, so it is going to be a Carbine.
First place I turned was CCS for a 2400KT to get the most all at once for my money.
But then I wondered about a 2260MB. That barrel on it is 24" long so I don't know if the 16" barrel would extend past the 2260 tube. May need to stick with the 2400 / 2250 lower tube to have enough extending to put on a moderator.

Then I saw Van's Disco in a Old Crosman 160 stock HERE and that got me thinking (never a good thing). :o

I have a spare Maxi (Disco) complete trigger group. Is that is the same as a 2260's?
And if it fits a 2260 tube, would that mean it also fits a 2400 / 2250 lower?

Now here is the "unique"... I also have an old, broken, repaired, Benji 392P stock.
It is glued, pinned and solid.. but ugly. A little wood filler and paint instead of stain it will pass a visual inspection. I would not feel bad about milling out the trigger area and using it, with a 22XX tube, and my Maxi trigger group if that is an option...

Holding everything up to my 1740, tube lays in the stock bed well.... it looks like the screw holes for the trigger group line up and it could just work.
Might make a nifty little carbine .20.

Now I find myself knee deep in Alchemy, Alliance, Magnumairpower, and Mountainair looking for parts. ::) ;)

A 2260 tube would accommodate a 14.5" LW barrel--the barrel is longer by a bit.

I tested it on my 2260 stainless Don Cothran tube.

Here is a pic of it with a Donny FL moderator attached (Polish-made adapter is the version with an undercut for a Disco):

For additional reference, my tube has an extended C02 cap:

I have already sold this excellent DC tube with power adjuster to a member of this forum.

Virtually brand new with no marks nor scuffs since I did not even tighten the breech/barrel band screws.

Yes, HD sir.

I ordered a stainless Don Cothran 2250/2400KT for it because the ss DC 2260 tube was too heavy and long for my build.

Did you drill/tap that TKO for the front sight or glue it on? If tapped, how well is it holding?

SWEET!
I already have a Rocker1 LDC I plan on using.
I took apart my 1740 and mocked up the Maximus trigger group. It worked well. Only needed a longer rear screw and I have stainless ones in house.
After I removed the trigger, I tried the tube fit in the Benj stock... bedding is perfect.
So now I got a plan... 16" LW .20 barrel, 2260 tube, Maxi trigger group, steel breech, in a 392P stock (minus the pump handle) = a short 2060 carbine.
BUT....
For the cost of all the "bits" I may be better off buying a new 2260MB from PA for $150 and swapping this barrel.
Time to start watching for second hand stuff.
