Maximus Power adjuster

     What Crosman power adjuster to use with Maximus?  Or is it easier just to make up one myself.

Challenger is most common, have to cut the stock for it to fit tho

I have the Crosman Challenger power adjuster on both my Maximus and my Discovery.
They both work good.
I reduced the power on both for target shooting and to get less noise.
I did not modify the Discovery stock because the wood still has the original finish.
I don't remember on the Maximus.  I may have rounded a little bit behind the power adjuster.  This would have been very little if any.
I ordered 1 Challenger power adjuster plus 1 hammer spring from DiscosRus.
Then later I ordered 1 Challenger power adjuster plus 2 Challenger hammer springs from Crosman.
You will need the Challenger part numbers to order from Crosman.
You can download the parts diagram and list of parts from the Crosamn website.
I think the power adjuster is about $15 and the springs are about $1.50 each.

My Maximus has the Challenger hammer to complement the Mrod/Challenger trigger.    The PA though is from MellonAir - I am using that because the hammer spring can be removed without removing the end cap.

I too have the Challenger adjuster. No Idea what people are talking about for the stock mod. Fit just fine. No mods needed for the stock at all.

Thanks for all the replies.  I have it narrowed down to Maximus/Disco vs. Beeman Chief vs. Diana Stormrider.  Leaning toward the chief but considering the Crosmans for parts availability and the Diana on the suggestion of a brother member.  Thanks again.

Difficult choice!!!   I would _like_ to recommend the Chief - good handling, wood, great feel - but sent two back, and had difficultly getting warranty parts for the third.   Maximus is light but long, excellent parts availability, only a good feel.   I do not have a Stormrider but have handled one - very light and compact, _repeater_, but seems like a lot of issues reported despite good reviews.

Given a good Chief shows up, and not needing a repeater, probably best.   Hammer spring is too heavy - no bell curve shot string, rather a declining shot string - approximately 870 to 700 over 19-20 shots.

How involved a job is swapping hammer springs?  Can the rear hammer spring adjuster overcome this problem??

On my variant 2 Chief and also one owned by someone else, the numbers above were with the spring preload at minimum.   Normally access should be quite easy - however, mine had the end cap threaded holes misaligned and the machine screw head snapped off.   It was NOT an easy fix to get the breech off for repair due to the fact the proper order of operations to remove the breech could not be performed.   I do not know how the factory got the screw in during assembly - obviously brute force.

Once a functioning rifle again, I shortened the hammer spring about two coils, flattened and ground the end and the rifle responded to adjustment with a nice 783-804-781 fps over 23 shots running from 1700 to 1200 psi.

(Variant 2 Chief was released shortly after introduction - they have two tiny bolt probe o-rings.)

Not involved at all.
When the Maximus rear cap is removed to to be replaced by the Crosman Challenger adjustable cap, the hammer spring just pulls right out and you insert the new hammer spring.  You need to watch the youtube video showing how to replace the Maximus end cap and hammer spring.
I think the video is for the Discovery, but the end caps for the Discovery and the Maximus are the same.
