Ted Williams Match Rifle

  I have shot it, a little.  It's been cold out.  The sun was shining yesterday afternoon, I shot a couple of quick groups across the chrony.  Crosman pellets shot between 600-610 fps.  Five 16 grain JSBs were right around 590 fps and fit under a dime, at 20 yards.  It's a dandy!

Here I figured in Texas it was always CO2 weather.
I got about 3 months here before I can take one outside again.

  Plenty of nice days in the winter but it can be brutally cold here in Amarillo.  The fact that CO2 doesn't perform well in the cold is not a problem: I don't, either.  When it's cold outside, you will find me inside.

  Update:

  Today was the first time I've really had a chance to put this thing to the test.  Sunny and 70 degrees outside.  Starting with a fresh pair of CO2 carts, I shot ten five-shot groups.  Forty shots were consistent in the 600 fps neighborhood, JSB 16 grain.  Even when velocity started dropping off, accuracy was very good.  At twenty yards, most groups were dime-size or smaller, a couple were practically one-holers.  Very pleased with this gun, gets better "mileage" than my other 160s.  Actually like it better than my third variant with S331 peep and die-cast trigger group.  I wonder if Sears requested a higher shot count, hence the shortened hammer spring.

Sounds like a nice shooter as well as looker. Both of my 160's Varient II and Varient III are gas hogs.
Cant help but wonder if the previous owner of yours knew what he was doing to make the spring mods.
I really doubt Sears would take the trouble with each Ted Williams.
But then yours is a "Match Rifle" maybe that was part of the package.

  I was thinking, perhaps the hammer spring was shortened at the factory.  This rifle doesn't appear to ever have been disassembled but, I suppose it might have been.  I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who has been into one.

Awesome would be interesting to know if Crosman made adjustments to get higher counts.

Really trying to figure the Weaver scope though. Is it 3/4”, 7/8”?  The turret caps look pretty 40’s - 50’. But those branded units kind of have a life of their own.

I agree Terry. You found yourself a sweet looking set up all the way around. Everything about it spells quality.

BTW; noticed your from Amarillo. Shoot we're practically neighbors. My wife & I moved to Conchas Dam right after our honeymoon. Worked for NM State Parks for a spell. Had a lot of folks from your neck of the woods frequent the park. I'll bet you fished it a time or two.

  The scope is marked Ted Williams/Sears 4X/PATD USA.  Looks like a rebranded Weaver, it's a steel 3/4" tube.  However, the eyepiece looks slightly larger and the adjustment caps are threaded steel, nicer than on the typical Weaver rimfire scopes.  Optics are brighter too.

I've spent a lot of time all over the eastern half of NM.  My first wife was from Albuquerque and her grandma lived up in Taos canyon.

Went out to Lake Conchas to see the vagrant Blue-footed Booby that showed up there a few years ago.
