Hi all,
I'm taking HSC in early November. Do I need a license to kill pest species?

i would check your local regs.
if the species you are after are listed in your hunting regs then you would more than likely need a license to take them.

If it's on your own property, in Georgia, you don't need a license nor take the HSC. As for "pest's", you may need a permit depending on the "pest".

Kudos on taking the HSC!
Time well spent in my opinion. Especially for those who were not raised around guns and taught how to respect them safely. Heck, I know some guys who have been hunting for years who could use a "refresher" course.
As far as the license, Checking with your states DNR is the best. You may be able to do it right from your computer.
If any listed here are what you are calling a "pests" you may be limited as to when you can take them...

looks like the usual pests ( hosps / starlings / pigeons / groundhogs ) arent on that list.
but as scott said,a hsc is a good thing to take if you havent. i remember taking mine at 12
oh and one more thing..............alligator has a smallgame season
thats pretty cool

As a resident in NM, I do not need a license or HSC to take pests.
But, I do need HSC to hunt in some states. No problem though as I have taken it, HSC, twice. Once with oldest daughter, once with youngest daughter. We had a great time and have enjoyed hunting together for 15 years now.
I also took concealed carry with oldest, then again with youngest when she was old enough.

I just completed HSC for the second time as well, I took the course when I was 12, my parents lost the HSC cert over the years ago. No harm or foul IMO. I have had a hunting license every year since then, missing a few years as times were hard.. To go outta state hunting you must have the HSC number to get an out of state so last month I took the course again.. I passed! Now I can go out of state hunting!
Good luck on your HSC, happy hunting.. Get the HSC booklet, study up on it, along with the hunting regs. Bone up on the regs too. get to know the game seasons, method of take and hunting areas. The other cool thing is that DF&G has other courses as well, survival, game care, maps/compass use etc.
