chose the rifle now I need the scope

So after much deliberation and extensive research and a big shout oit to dairyboy for all his insight and advice I have chosen the taipan veteran long .22. ordered it this morning and I cannot wait. I wasn't thinking about scopes to much now I am trying to find a scope before the rifle arrives I have a few options I thunk that will work nicely with the rifle.

I also could use some recommendations on rings and if there is any scope you think is a betterrible deal please feel free to make suggestions.

never had a ffp but I am open to trying it out. Never had this nice a rifle so I want to have some decent glass to pair with it. I prefer it to be not terribly heavy but not a deal breaker. hadn't heard much about the discovery scopes but they looks really nice for the price. The athalon seems so so with reviews a good scope not as crisp as other I just know a lot of people like it on there taipan. but hawke vortex are better in the med, higher price range.  thanks yall sorry for long post.

thanks JoeKool but that's a little out of my price range.  Im topping out in the 300 dollar range I can go up a little 330 give or take but that's all I got for glass.

You will never find a 300+ dollar Hawke as crisp as a Athlon Argos.


And the Stirlings are high priced, old tech, junk for the most part.


Hawke has finally upped their optics game, but charge dearly as in 5-600 for a 3-400 dollar scope. Stirlings, 800-1000 for a 3-400 dollar scope.


The Discoveries are gaining  ground.


For good, solid info on the in's and outs' of scope quality vs price, go to youtube and look at the scoe vid's by Joe Rhea.


If you hunt,and use different power settings for differing conditions and ranges, go FFP if at all possible.
What use to cost 1500 to well over 3000 usd, is now available to the everyday shooter. I have used them for years, but paid dearly for them.

I have my Taipan currently with an Athlon but Im switching to a Discovery I just received, the reason is that Im upgrading the magnification. My Athlon is the Talos 4-14x44 FFP, this scope is perfect for my TX200, it was originally there, but when I received the Taipan I use it because was the best that I had at the time.

Now I realize I can hunt beyond 100 yds and I was looking into upgrading the magnification. I got a discovery 6-24x50 and I cannot be happier. This is the one I got

Contact Charlie and tell Orion from the forum is recommending you. Charlie is a nice guy and he will help you deciding what’s better for you.

I personally dont like the Discovery you are sharing mainly because the reticle. Check in Charlie’s site and you will see some nice reticles there.

About FFP: It depends on the use you are planning for the scope. I don’t use mine for FT, I hunt and punch paper, and for this it is the best, IMO, I’m not going back. I don’t have to worry about magnification. I range, calculate the holdover and then adjust the parallax, the magnification is to your liking, but the nice thing is, the holdover is not affected at all.

The only downside that some people will tell you about ffp is the reticle, so be careful whith that. I really like the reticle that Athlon uses, the Christmas tree, Discovery have one model with exactly the same reticle but a bit more  expensive than the one I bought, look into their HD models and you will see. Mine is nothing crazy but great simple reticle.

I’m waiting anxiously to the weekend to see if I have the chance to install my discovery. Ohhh one thing I dont like is that blue color, but nothing that I cannot fix with a spray paint..... I’ll share pictures

I'll go ahead and suggest a Falcon M18+ 4-18 x 44 FFP.  I may be slightly above what you're wanting to spend.  If you want MIL, you can get it from swfa.com for around $350.  If you want MOA, you'll have to get it straight from Falcon, or via their ebay listing(just under $400).  Either way, the MOA will have to come from across the pond.  It still only takes less than a week to get here from the UK.

I have the MOA version.  As a matter of fact, I liked it so much I ordered a second one.  The glass is very clear for the $$.  I've looked through the Athlons, and the Falcon glass was better, at least vs the Athlons I have looked through.  The Athlon is heavier too.  The Falcon is around 26oz I think.  The biggest downside is that it only goes to 18X, but that is more than enough for me. 

The bottom line for the Falcon in my case is I searched far and wide for a FFP scope in that price range, and simply couldn't find one better for what I wanted in a scope.  Their customer service is top notch too.  I've heard good things about the Discovery scopes, but haven't had a chance to look through one yet.

If you want a bullet proof fixed power scope look at the SWFA Super Snipers.  I've never seen one in person but they are not light and compact.

How will you be using the rifle and at what range.  I like high magnification shooting off a bench but low magnification shooting offhand and at closer ranges.

I got the low profile, but as you can see you can get medium and high for the same price, and for the price this looks outstanding to me. This is a pcp with almost no recoil, no need to expend more, IMHO

I really like the Sightron S-TAC 4-20 X 50. It is smaller and lighter than the Hawke SW, better glass, and I like the MOA-2 reticle. As for FFP, it's something to consider. I've tried several of them, don't especially like it. I think it's value is as a hunting scope, since you can accurately range and measure holdover at any power. When I'm shooting at the range, it is a known distance. When hunting, I carry a small laser rangefinder. Many of the reticles in FFP scopes become too thick for my use at the highest powers. The ones that don't, are so small at lower powers that their usefulness is compromised, especially in low light. But, many folks love them.

When you get rings, always do a lapping and an alignment as in my avatar picture.  Its a picture of two alignment checking rods after a lapping and mounting with bar stock.
You need to KNOW that your rings are perfectly straight.  There's a few other steps to get this right.  PM me and Ill be more helpful.

+1 for the Athlon Argos 6-24x50, it is clear, and focuses near  as well as my Swfa 3-15x44, and works great. I should be receiving a 4-24x50 Discovery 34mm soon.(returning a Discovery 4-16x50ED) I will give a review of this scope when I get it.

thanks for all the input guys. I have quite a few scopes on the soon to purchase list to be sure. I am going with a hawke 4-16-44.  It's listed at 220 dollar scope but a fellow forum member isn't using it and says he liked https://us.hawkeoptics.com/vantage-side-focus-4-16x44-mil-dot.html  it, and is willing to sell it to me for 79 bucks. Can't beat that with a stick, pipe or a bat and if I don't like it I'm not in it much so win win.

Now I just need some quality rings. any suggestions for rings for that scope?

Not a fan of FFP scopes, but you can't really go wrong with an Athlon scope. I got this one on the cheap and I'm really happy with it.



Can't give you much insight on what rings to get,  but I'll say this much. It depends on what you're mounting, what you're mounting it on, and the application. Me I got a set of Eagle Vision adjustable rings for my Athlon, since planned on setting it up for shoot long range. They were not cheap, but to me they are well worth the money.

 Ive owned at least 100 different scopes maybe more mostly from trades and buys off of the forum here i have to say FOR THE MONEY i havent found a better scope then the Monstrum FFP, its field of view is huge and turrets are crisp and audible. For under $200 its and amazing scope.
