Model 2200 Magnum FPS

We had the Chrony out today checking out the velocities of our new airsoft guns so I thought I'd see what the old 2200 would do.
I gave this airgun to my FIL back in the 80's and got it back here recently after his passing. It's been in the closet for the better part of 20 years. He used it to take out a few moles in Louisiana.

dang.  looks like she's putting out about as much on 10 as a benji on 8.  considering that's supposed to be the max on both i'd say 640-650 is pretty dang good.  especially if you consider the valve configuration, probe length, etc. of a 2200 i bet that it could be made to shoot even harder with a little work.  then again, good luck getting it back together once it's apart...

The advertised weight is 14gr. I pulled out the old power scale and the average weight was 13.5gr.
Air Hunter don't plan on taking it apart but I do need to oil her up. Like I said she's been in the closet for about 20 years.

thats pretty impressive for an old gun thats been in the closet for 20 years lol. good numbers very good. I've always felt that those guns were tanks. lots of people like those old pumpers. me included.

I like the old pumpers also... My Model 1 (2200) was locked up for 12 years before I got back into airguns...

Light, handy, easy to pump and with 6 pumps they put out pleanty of power. I have mine sighted in at 20 yds with 6 pumps. With 4 pumps it hits dead on 15 yds. Theres not enough difference in 6 or 8 pumps to make it worth the effort.

I put 3 big, thick 0-rings on the barrel inside the shroud. Front, middle and by chamber.

Really improved the accuracy. So far it's Daisy Wadcutters. There must be some thing better, have tried CHP's & some old English Minuteman pellets but there no good.

I had to make a spacer out of wood at the rear of the barrel because I have the older tapered shroud with the wedge type kink at the bottom... I also noticed that mine likes wadcutters (old crosman copperheads)  better than CPHP's also... I didn't try it with the other pellets that I just got yet...

Wow - that is really strong!  Most 2100s throw 177 7.9 grain pellets at around 650 fps with 10 pumps... crazy how strong that thing is!

I would be careful putting more than 10 pumps in it - 15 may really be pushing it!

I did some research on it and found that the original silver receiver ones had higher FPS than the newer black receiver guns. I'm going to set up a paper target tomorrow and see how accurate it is. I think I'll being only using 5 pumps for target shooting until I get a quiet tube for it. After that 10 pumps will be max for shooting small game.

I've heard that also about the ones with the silver receivers also... 5 Pumps is good for target shooting... That's what I use on mine... Any more and I tear up the my wooden backing...

 Those are really good numbers. Before my 2200 (black receiver) died, it only shot 585-595 with CPHP's at 10 pumps. While I was testing it I pumped it to 15 and it only shot 464. Now at 8 pumps it's only shooting 280's. It must have blown a seal at 15 pumps. I haven't yet taken it apart to see.

there's another gun i'd like to see revamped.  crosman, if you are reading this, bring back the 2200!!  and give it wood this time!!

The cheap pumper I'd like to see Crosman revamp is the 66 Powermaster. Back when they had die-cast receivers and rifled barrels they were just like a 2100 (maybe a little less powerful) but without that annoying loading port of the 2100/2200. My old 66 is dead nuts accurate and whole lot easier to load. That loading port of the 2200/2100 is the show stopper for me. I have a 2200 and seldom shoot it. At times it takes me longer to load the pellet than to put 5 or 6 strokes in it. A new 2100/2200 with the open loading breach like the 66 or even a "clip" magazine like the current 760's would be awesome.

Guess I'm the guy they got the term "fat fingered" from.

Yeah it is sometimes a pain to load.
After doing some things around the house this mourning I made me a 25 yard shooting lane and setup a target. I couldn't shoot for nothing. Need to get me a good rest and do it when it's a little cooler. It's already 95 degrees outside. I may look at getting a better scope too.

I just got done shooting my Model 1 (2200) today... I find the domed premiers easiest to work with when loading... If the pellet goes in backward I just push the bolt up a little bit and pull back then the pellet rolls into place.. Works with the 2100 also...

sixshootertexan, do you have a tapered barrel on your 2200?  I found that mine had a problem from the factory where the front sight screw pushed down and deformed the "straw" barrel to where there was a bump in the barrel.. I never really knew about it until recently because I only shot cans and not dimes as a kid... I tried many subtle ways to fix it but I ended up having to find a drill bit that fit perfectly into the barrel, measured down to the depth of the screw deformity, put masking tape on the bit so it would not go down any further, and then I drilled out the bump... Now my Model 1 is really accurate compared to when I first got it out of storage a few months ago...

mav72 yes it has a tapered barrel. I never looked at the end of the barrel closely before. Until now. My barrel does not have rifling all the way to the end of the barrel. It is bored back just pass where the sight screw comes thru the barrel. I wonder if some of the first ones passed inspection before they were aware of the problem.  Mine was made 5/81.

sixshootertexan : Your rifle is the 1 month older sibling of mine... LOL  Yea, the actual barrel doesn't go all the way to the end... What you see at the tip is a crowned cylinder that's attached to the actual rifled barrel.... The sight screw problem actually occurs close to where the two parts meet, about an 8th of an inch on the barrel side....

The spacer mod that I did for the rear of my tapered barrel was to use a small wooden spool from an arts and crafts store. I cut off the front part of the spool and then use a drill bit to widen the hole to fit the barrel and a pen & dremel to shape the outsides of the spool to fit the shroud in the rear... I did this mod because I noticed that my 2100 actually shoots better with a spacers, aka barrel stabilizers, so I decided to make one for the rear of my Model 1 (2200).... The front of  the tapered barrel 2200 is already stabilized by the metal cylinder so no need for a front...

I haven't had to look down the barrels of many 2200s but I have heard of two other cases of 2200s with a similar problem with the barrel which were discovered when sent to a specialized 2100/2200 tuner...

Well I tried to shoot today. I didn't realize how bad the trigger was until I got serious about trying get a tight group. Long creep and very stiff and the scope is awful. Think I'll take it back to Academy and get my money back. Here's a 5 shot group at 25 yards.

Hi, how big is that group? I was getting bowling ball sized groups before discovering the screw problem... At first I thought it was just the pellets... After I fixed the problem, I got the groups down to nickels at 10 meters...

Yea, the trigger does creep forever but I grew up on them like that and had gotten used to it... I'm keeping my Model 1 stock though... I did polish the trigger on my AM77 (2100) and got it smooth but nothing can be done about that creep without alteration...

Top hole to bottom hole is about 3". I may go thru it and see what I can do. It could be pellets but I'm not going to test a bunch of different ones for a gun of this type.
