Bullet sizing, what gives best accuracy?

Let's hear it, what gives best results for you? Bore size, slightly over or slightly under and how much over/under?

One Thousandths under has done well for the .25  Rainstorm. OneShots .30 as well.  Was shooting .250 in it, and when I switched to .249, the groups tightened up, less fliers, and picked up 26 fps.


My .257 Talon/Dor. is 0003 over. Would like to try smaller.

rkr: As you probably know there is no right or wrong just test. And it depends gun, barrel, etc. Example Corsair .308 It shoots .309 sized bullets. Those are most accurated on Corsair. Atleast those 3 which you know from here.
 Then you can pick Huben K-1 that very first version. 2 different gun (both version I) same bullets and different results. One likes .222,5 and other .223 sized. Both shooters tested .222,5 and .223 diameters and gap was huge. Go figure out...?  Then those Savages which was builded about 4 years ago.. Barrels are TJ's Black powder barrels. Should be .454 but .452 gives better accuracy and muzzle velocity was higer when sized on .452.  Again something what you only can figure out by testing. I'm sure you are aware of both Savage's and Corsair's capableness as you have seen both guns on competitions in Finland... Just few test and result to mentioned.

Yes, I shot your Corsair in one of them 200M comps - it's more accurate than I am Anyway, it would be nice to see what gives results and in what barrels and what they slugged - it just might reduce the testing needed a bit. My personal experience points towards slightly undersized bullets.

Well like said if possible its better test either way undersize oversize and between. Just my opinion.

I have two molds that I don’t even bother with sizing and they both shoot great. Of course they drop near , actually slightly smaller than barrel grove diameter. They are the .220” BBt and the 257420 . I guess that would put me in the .001” smaller .

Hmmm... That also depends on alloy you know that of course. Those exaples are just drop in ocean. Been noticed on casting/shooting casting bullets that nothing can take for fact. There is always if... Those 3 guns/barrels points in my mind that even same guns custom or out of box can be very  different on accuracy and diameter. Thats why i always keep telling guys who sometimes buys casted bullets from me and asks which is best bullets for this and that gun. That i can't say this is "the bullet" or diameter you need try it your self. I can give hint or point right direction but i cant never say thats it for sure.

On that sizing matter.... If possible i take molds way bigger diameter and rather size bullets down. Making sure roundness and all bullets are how to put it....in same line. When those are sized down on couple dies. Casting errors also are out off game on some level.

I've got the  NOE-41-FN with the hollow point pin, the casting is great but they do need to be resized, I tried tapering in the barrel breech it did help a little but .001 would probably do it for a sizing sleeve.  I'm not experienced with resizing slugs personally.  I can shoot them but they chamber way too hard.  I'm using pure lead so they're soft.  When the funds grow some I'll get the stuff I need from NOE

I think Lee carries a hand loading press, I'm wondering if something like that would work ok

I’ve also opened up the sizers with fine emory cloth and a dowel on a drill . I made a sizing die once and believe me when I tell you it’s much cheaper to just buy a sizer from NOE considering the time it took me to make one .


Don’t look at the price , you can get them for much cheaper on sale .

The problem with hand loaders is that they are heavy, bench presses are more merciful to your hands and elbows. You have to think about how long your sizing session is going to be. I use this one, it came in a reloading kit.

Hi Wayne,
Is the hand loading press you mention one that does not mount onto something? I recall that Lee makes one that is hand held. If that is the one, I highly recommend against it.

A press that mounts to the bench allows one to operate the press with one hand, and handle the bullets with the other. A hand held press would be slow
and awkward and unpleasant to use.

A bench mount press could even be mounted to a board and clamped to a table if necessary.

I personally use Lyman model 45 and 450 bullet sizers; they are pretty regularly available on the used market for reasonable prices.

I second the Lee, with the NOE sizing kit plus bushing's. It is cheap and works well if you are careful when feeding rounds into it. I cut a Gatorade bottle in half, cut a hole in the bottom and sleeved it with some pvc I had lying around to catch the bullets as they fall out of the top.
