A scope question - Weaver v4-16x42 849410

I have one of these scopes (new in box) that I intended to use on one of my RWS54s.   I put it on a regular rifle for one shooting session.  The crosshair was so fine and the dot so small that I can only make it out against a white target background.  It subtends no more than 1/2 the diameter of a 22 caliber hole.It is at least as fine as a TK Lee 1/8" dot I had in my old Fecker scope. I have adjusted the focus as best I can but still can't really see it.  My old eyes made me take the 1/8" dot out of my Fecker too.  Other 1/4" dots I can still see. 

The specifications say that it has 1/4 minute dot with a fine cross-hair. 

My question is:  Has anyone heard of Weaver putting 1/8" dots in their scopes?  I found the T-24 series does have 1/8" dots but not this v model.

I've been looking at that scope for a couple years now, thinking hard about getting one. I've never looked through one but from what you say it might work great for target work on my FWB 603. Sounds like a target scope only, small dot and reticle not too good on dark background.

I sent it back to Weaver after explaining the problem to their tech shop.  We will see what they say.

Comment was: if defective they will replace with similar that meets my needs.  If it is within spec, it's my problem.....

Got the repaired scope back today!  Have to pay $10 shipping but that's all.  Took about 3 weeks.

They did the following.

RR Reticle Failure: apparently the original one was defective?
IP Inspected/Tested/Meets SPE:  SPE may mean specifications
OA Overadjusted/shim mounts: No clue what this means?? 
CA Clean and Adjust
RZ Re-center Reticle.

I can see the cross-hair and dot now.  It will NOT be suitable for hunting against a varied background but should make a good bench-rest / target combination.  The crosshair is very fine and the dot is supposed to be 1/4MOA.  I'll check that next time I get to the 100yd range.  Younger eyes might be able to make broader use of it but NOT me!

I will put it on my .177 RWS 54 to see how it does.

More later if I learn anything useful.

The V16, I have become pretty partial to.  I have several, and here are a few pics.  You are right, the duplex dot is very small, and can be tough to pic up in the timber.  But you can shoot a squirrel in the eye at 50 yds if you want..........lol.......as the dot may be smaller than his eye.  Great scopes tho, I would buy another one and not even hesitate.  Another excellent scope which is not talked about much is the smaller Weaver rimfire with AO.  It has the normal plex, but I would buy one in front of the Leupold EFR if I wanted to save a few pennies,

So there was something wrong with the scope, good thing you sent it in to have it checked rather than sell it. I'm glad it worked out for you, if you decide to sell it now you can do so in good conscience.
