I'm trying to decide if I'm asking too much, or if I should send this back and try again?

I've got about 200 pellets through the new P-ROD, and it is VERY pellet picky. It shoots the AA 16gr ok (just over 1" @ 30 yards, bent skirts and all) and almost nothing else very well with a few missing the target by a foot or more at 30 yards.

Truth be told, this thing is only going to be stock until I decide it's accurate at which point I'm going to turn it up. I run nearly all my rifles in the 800's and this is just too anemic for our tastes. I know the shot count will be crazy low, but it's life is going to be the garden gun for chippers and starlings and 10-12 shots is fine (I will tether if plinking).

Couple other things:

Doesn't like to be filled above ~2500 PSI, as in, FPS drops 50+ until it gets under 2500 PSI
When tethered, I can hear the air SLOWLY fill into the pressure tube, I'm thinking sticky pin in the foster fitting (or is this normal)

Do these respond well to accurizing (re-crown, soften the leade, polish barrel port to remove sharp edges, etc)? Or is it a lottery and I'm better of ordering a new barrel or exchanging this? I love the platform, very maneuverable and light, Rocker1 is sending a LDC my way so it will be quiet to boot.

My Prod was enough accurate out of the box with JSB's 15,90 and 18,1 in 5,52 head size.Never tried other pellets.
After a light crown and breech polish is capable of better than 1/2" groups at 30yards and i can take down starlings at about 40yards consistently.Mine is regulated and bottled and shoots 15,90's at 833fps.
From readings here,it seems recent barrells are less pellet picky than old ones,maybe it worth to try another one if you can obtain a free replacement and go for the crown and breech job on the second one,if needed.

My first thought is that the barrel needs cleaning (actually, it's my 2nd thought too).

Have you tried removing the shroud and see how the gun shoots yet, trigger adjustment, shoot a string over the crony and see if it is shooting fps is all over the place? My Prod loves JSB's, Polymags and good ole Crosman CPHP's shooting from 600-900 fps.

+1 for trigger adjustement,trigger screws tends to loose and needs a drop of thread locker.

Thanks guys. You convinced me to tear into it. The trigger definitely needs some work (kinda crunchy, I'm running this trigger in 2 other builds also and know what it's capable of) and I'll give the barrel a good scrub while it's apart.... If that doesn't work I'll start massaging the barrel, worst case I'll order another barrel. I'm not a fan of sending back entire guns when it's not going to be stock by the end of the weekend anyways.

Missing the target by a foot at 30 yds means something is definitely wrong. I'm talking clipping the shroud or seriously messed up barrel wrong. My P-rod is trustworthy our to 60-70 yds depending on my abilities more than the gun's.

If you want power from a prod put a ss valve in it and a longer barrel, it will send some mrods to the corner, ask Randy (screwwork) his is doing over 80 fpe. David

So I pulled it apart to give a proper scrub and inspection. Unfortunately, once I had it out and could get a bore light in it I can definitely see some pock marks/damage in the barrel about midway. I've never seen anything like it, it almost looks like a "bad casting" (if this were made of cast iron) at several places in the bore. The crown actually looked pretty good and the leade wasn't overly sharp so I didn't mess with those (plus, I would like to see if Crosman will warranty the barrel).

Just put it back together and shot a few groups with it's "best" pellet, it's about 1" at 30 yards, I feel like there is still more in there based upon what others have been shooting, though 1" at 30 yards isn't terrible for a "pistol". I'll have time this week to try a few more top tier pellets and see how it acts with them now that I've polished the bore, hopefully a pellet steps up the plate.

If it was me I would remove the barrel and clamp it down (between blocks of wood) in a strong vise, get a good brass brush with a clean rod and some Hoppes #9 and scrub the *(&^ out of the barrel. Then push (or pull) patches through til they come out clean.

Put it all back together...

No good?

Order a new barrel..

BTW...depending on where you bought the pistol, maybe you can deal with the seller...”Give me a new barrel or the whole pistol is coming back”...

I had to cut back my barrel and recrown. Mine shoots 5.54 ftt pellets far better than JSB’s

If the barrel is bad and it's still on warranty I'd go for another barrel.

Probably want to keep the barrel work you did to your self if sending it back or asking for a warranty replacement though. Unless your a gunsmith Crosman gets a little funny about people working on their warrantied guns. GRRRRRR!!!

Something I struggled with on my Prod was the barrel bore wasn't centered on mine. The result was pellets would shoot to the left or right as the velocity changed over the string. Once I regulated it to one speed that stopped. Before the reg I would tether it to my almost out of air tank. Around 2000-1700 psi and noticed it shooting much better. Other than that my barrel was pretty good. I did polish it up and work it over good as I always do.
Last weekend I took 2 baby ground squirrels at 64 yards and an adult at 94. I'm really starting to like it!

An anonymous donor has volunteered a replacement barrel so I'm going to try that next. I did open up the TP to .116" while I had it apart, haven't ran across the crony yet but it's hitting harder for sure. I am going to up the spring to get rid of the partial valve lock I'm seeing above 2500 PSI (I have a few 8# springs laying around that I can cut).

I'm also going to order some different head sizes in the HN FTT, I have nearly every other decent pellet covered, but I don't have these on the shelf (I don't have any rifles that like the HN pellets yet). It's a good excuse to add to the collection.

When I get this hitting where I want I'm thinking a balanced SS valve is in it's future to keep the cocking effort down but the power up (this is my wife's daily driver, and reduced cocking effort is high on the list of wants). I'd rather not put a longer barrel on it because that is really the reason I bought it (compact-maneuverable, light weight). I turned my 2400kt into basically a 18 FPE .177 PROD with a bottle, BNM kit and a full 27" barrel shroud and it's just too long to be nimble.

Thank you all for the discussion. I'm learning a little more about these all the time, definitely glad to have one in the collection. I will post my findings/progress here.

With the SS valve you won't get the valve lock. I'm sold on the SS valve, you won't believe the power you can get from the Prod.

Donor barrel showed up today as well as the Rocker1 LDC (which is flat out awesome on this setup).

Donor barrel was also spraying everything I threw at it. Loosened LDC by a 1/2 turn, starting magically liking HN FTT 5.53 (I found a tin hiding in my stash), I assume this might be an older generation barrel so this makes sense.

So I removed the LDC, put up the tightest group I've seen out of this pistol yet, about .400 @ 30 yards, but my word is it ever loud with no baffle or LDC. So I reinstalled LDC with no barrel spacer and put up a .500" group, I then removed the Oring from the barrel spacer and reinstalled, tightened the LDC down and now it's holding about 1/2" with HN FTT 5.53 @ 30 yards.

Which leads me to the question, what could the tightness of the LDC/shroud have to do with anything? It's shooting well now so I'm not going to ask too many "why's" nor am I going to dig into it too far until the SS valve gets here (it's ordered).

To be completely honest this acts like a harmonic issue, but this would be the first I've run into it causing this many issues on a sub 20 FPE gun if that's what it is.

Any ideas? I can't believe how finicky this P-Rod is...
